Which is better? IIT Gandhinagar for CS or BITS Goa for CS?

DB
Dishari Bannerjee Posted On : March 26th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2018)

It is clear how so many students from IIT Gandhinagar have answered your question before me. And this is what makes these answers slightly biased. But I would try on my part, to provide you with authentic information on IIT Gandhinagar- without coming off as biased.

STEP 1: DECIDE YOUR BRANCH

  • This is a very tricky part. It's either the Electric or CS branch that leaves students confused.
  • Honestly, it is of no use to pursue Electrical Engineering while uninterested at IIT.
  • If you are still indecisive, you can talk to the ex-students of that department.
  • BITS is great for CS and IIT Gandhinagar for Electrical Engineering. But if you still have some second thoughts, try this next step.

STEP 2: BITS vs IIT

  • BITS being older and having more experience makes placements easier. They also offer more salary packages for a CS degree than an Electrical Engineering degree at IIT Gandhinagar.
  • IITs still have an upper hand as a brand name. In case you are wanting to shift to the USA for higher studies, it would be great. Otherwise, BITS Goa isn't that bad a choice in India as it is valued equally as the other IITs.

Therefore, if the USA is on your bucket list, go for IIT. Grabbing a foreign internship at IIT Gandhinagar is easier. But then if you simply want to stay in India and study, BITS Goa and IIT Gandhinagar stand equal as a brand.

In case you have second thoughts on learning MS applications and shifting abroad, check the next step.

STEP 3: TAKE IT EASY

  • For you, neither the college nor the branch is a big deal. You have both the choices open. Think it through and choose a place where you learn for 4 years, pursuing your B.Tech degree.
  • According to location, Goa is definitely better than Gujarat, as the climate there is balanced and not extremely hot or humid.

One of my friends had an option to choose between a certain branch that held his interest among IIT Gandhinagar for Electrical Engineering or the AIEEE colleges. It even included underrated IITs like metallurgy, aeronautical, etc. But he was certain about Electrical. Eventually, the choices came down to NIT Warangal and IIT Gandhinagar. He then thought that NIT Warangal was better than BITS Goa despite having BITS Goa for Electrical. And he eventually went for IIT Gandhinagar considering its popularity.

He was a 2013 pass-out and even after this, he is still not sure if he had made the right decision. It is fine if you're unable to make a decision. But once you decide, make sure to excel at it.

IIT Gandhinagar is a premier engineering institute even after that it has tried to contribute its fullest efficiency to the department of arts & humanities. The MA Program in Society and culture is one such example of it. The major highlights of the course are mentioned below:

  • It is an interdisciplinary and flexible course. It provides great insight into the cultural codes in the context of nations & societies.
  • You will develop a good skill base for doctoral studies, policy work, consultancy and it opens up a wide range of careers.
  • Students are given the freedom to touch subjects like Political Science, Communication, Neuroscience, and Psychology.
  • The course is provided as a blend so that a reasonable amount of freedom to follow their choice.

The three constituents of course are :

  1. Literature & Society- To help understand the creativeness of languages across the society in sync with different caste, class, print, and digital cultures.
  2. History & Politics- This is an aim to understand Indian Politics from a deep end in order to reach its foundation.
  3. Public policy & Human Development- It is a methodological approach to look into development by applying social research.

The course is quite theory intensive and the institute believes in providing continuous assessment through evaluations, discussions, cross-questioning, and guest lectures. The course structure is systematic and hence a positive review is a must for the college.

How was your interview experience for IIT Gandhinagar for an MTech in mechanical engineering?

AS
Anisha Srivastav Posted On : July 27th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

My brother had to appear for an online interview because he applied during the corona time. He joined Google Meet on time and began with his introductions. The interviewers asked him a number of questions like

  • Describe the college you did your bachelor's from and the placement scenario there
  • Is there any topic you are most comfortable with for the technical questions?
  • What is compressible flow and compressible fluid?
  • what is internal energy?
  • PV^? what are its assumptions?
  • Define isoentropic process
  • dh = M Cp dt where can we apply this? Is it valid for gases only?
  • Define Cp and Cv
  • For solids why do we use Q=mcdt .what is C here?
  • Why is solid C constant here?

Basically, he was bombarded with a lot of technical questions although they helped him a lot. From the interview experience, he arrived at the conclusion that to ace the interview one must have revised the notes he/she prepared while studying for GATE.

Which is better for CSE, IIT Gandhinagar or IIT Ropar?

YA
Yash Arora Posted On : March 12th, 2021
IIM Bangalore | IIT Gandhinagar

When it comes to IITs it’s not really easy to compare them especially when these both are of the same generation.

However, if you still need to compare it is important for you to understand that an undergraduate degree is more of an exploration to discover your passion and interest. This hypothesis has been vetted by a large number of IIT graduates, IIM graduates, and many professors and IIT alums.

Let’s take a few examples for a case in point.

  • Dr. Raghuram Rajan, a top IIT alum studied electrical at IIT, followed up with an MBA at IIM and then a Ph.D. from MIT to become an economist.
  • Also, the TVF guy (Jeetu bhaiya from the Kota Factory) did undergrad from IIT Kharagpur only to become a comedian and actor later. Interesting isn’t it?

Flexibility:

So now that you understand the importance of flexibility and passion, IIT Gandhinagar stands out here undoubtedly. The curriculum at IIT Gandhinagar is very flexible and it allows you to study anything under the sun. This flexibility is the reason behind the success of Many IIT Gandhinagar graduates.

Apart from that, IIT Gandhinagar has the most funds among the second generation IITs. It offers around 30–40% of the batch with options to pursue foreign internships and great research opportunities.

Location:

If you compare IIT Ropar with IIT Gandhinagar, the latter takes the trophy again because it is situated in Gandhinagar which is the capital of Gujarat. The campus sits in the vicinity of CM residence, Vidhan Sabha, ambitious GIFT City project, prominent institutes such as DAIICT, NIFT, and many others.

Placement:

Placements at IIT Gandhinagar is excellent. The first CSE batch graduated in 2020. Without CSE only, firms such as Nutanix, Goldman Sachs, ITC, Barclays, etc. have been recruiting at the campus.

Alumni:

IIT Gandhinagar has to date graduated about 600+ students from BTech and at least 80–90% of them are quite successful. You can see alums are working in firms such as Mckinsey, Microsoft in the US, Amazon, Apple, BCG, ATK, Google, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, ITC, PnG, to name a few. You can also visit the alumni portal to get an idea about it or just visit LinkedIn.

For these factors, CSE at IIT Gandhinagar is a better alternative.

How can I get admission in IIT Gandhinagar?

SD
Shreya Dhar Posted On : March 31st, 2021
BTech Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2018)

For B.Tech, you need to appear in IIT JEE and score a valid rank. If you are willing to take admission in M.Tech, a valid score in GATE is required.

  • After the submission of the application, a list of the shortlisted candidates will be posted on the college’s website.
  • If you are shortlisted, you will have to be present at the Campus on the date mentioned in the notice.
  • You will first have to appear for an Aptitude Test which consists of English, Maths, and Basic Core questions. The results for this test are declared in an hour or two.
  • If you are shortlisted after the Aptitude Test, you will have to attend a personal interview. This is considered the final round.
  • If you are selected for the interview, you will be welcomed to the college’s MTech course. Sometimes questions based on Maths, Matrices, Differential Equations, etc. could be asked in the interview.

This is because the college is more into CFD and analysis of materials where one needs to have a good hold in the Finite Element Analysis.

Who do you think is the worst professor at IIT Gandhinagar? Why?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : March 12th, 2021

There can’t be a single professor to blame but in general, the faculty of Electrical Engineering is not quite up to the mark.

Teaching:

  • Professors like Rajendran and Ravi Hegde are pretty much amateur at teaching.
  • Raghavan Sir's way of teaching is outdated. I heard from my friends that he does not complete 1/10th of the syllabus and his entire semester teaching can be summed up in just 5 pages.
  • Naran Sir skims through the slides and expects you to memorize the slides. He is also quite irregular in classes.
  • Professors like Nithin George and Uttama are decent in teaching but can’t match up to the IIT level.
  • The best one my friend experienced is Prof. Arup, who covers the syllabus beautifully and will make you understand the nuances of photonics. If you take up Research under him, it’ll be quite a good experience for you.

Most of the research work here isn’t single funded. They claim to conduct world-class research but don’t have a single journal paper for years. This is the reason why IIT Gandhinagar ranking had many pitfalls in previous years.

Does IIT Gandhinagar have facilities and a good infrastructure?

PP
Poulomi Paul Posted On : March 5th, 2021
IIT GN CSE

IIT Gandhinagar is the only IIT among various other semi-new IITs to have entirely shifted all its premises into its own campus.

  • IITGN is privileged with an afresh 21st-century campus, which is popularly facilitated with all the major necessities. Besides, it also is benefited with enough infrastructure that can weigh up to catering to more than its current magnitude of students as a whole.
  • The new campus of the institution has both capacious classrooms, and small classrooms alongside huge auditoriums, offices for staff members, professors, and faculty employees all anew.
  • Alongside those spacious rooms, it also has newly made 6 hostel buildings and 2 messes with various modernized equipment like wifi routers, smoke detectors, and more devices alike.
  • The institution has a gymnasium, basketball court, cricket ground, volleyball court, temporary athletics track, TT room, and a football ground as well. There are things other than these which students can explore once they visit this vast campus.

Thus, as per your question concerns, IIT Gandhinagar has both facilities and infrastructure at par with other world-class institutes and is yet under development to become better.
