When will the permanent campus of IIT Mandi be ready?

HS
Harpreet Singh Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
B.Tech Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (2019)

IIT Mandi campus is located in Kamand village, 14 km away from the town of Mandi, and is divided into two campuses; North and South campus. The distance between both the campuses is about 3-4 km and students take buses to attend classes from the residential campus to the academic area.

  • The South campus is developed as the academic block along with the sports facilities while the North campus will house the residential blocks. Currently, the South campus is fully operational and B.Tech freshers are allotted rooms there.
  • The North campus hosts some PhDs and 3rd & 4th year B.Tech students. When fully operationalized, it will host all the undergraduate students.

So you need not worry about the campus, it is ready to host all its residents for the next 4 years of their life in a picturesque location.

Which is better, chemical at IIT Kharagpur or CS at IIT Mandi?

AS
Aman Sharma Posted On : March 20th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2022)

Many students go through this dilemma after clearing their JEE Advance whether to choose Computer Science in a new IIT or to choose any lower branch in the old IITs. Following information can help you in taking the decision better:

  • In case if Computer Science is your passion and you feel joy by solving logical problems patiently, then without any second thought, you should go for CS at IIT Mandi. You can easily get a good placement there or even pursue your research work there.
  • If you are not well acquainted with coding then it is highly advisable to get exposed to it and then decide whether you genuinely enjoy it or not.
  • IIT Kharagpur is a good choice if you go for Chemical Engineering as it is one of the most reputed institutes of India. CE is in great demand and will also be in the coming years. The course of CE at IIT Kharagpur is vivid, meeting the industry standards. The curriculum of CE is easier as compared to other branches like Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • You will have enough time and freedom to enjoy the college life and sharpen your other skills side by side which will eventually help you in getting jobs in the companies. Most companies call CE students for interviews and internships.
  • IIT Kharagpur has a better ranking than IIT Mandi, because of which, if you plan to pursue MBA abroad after your B.Tech, you will definitely be getting an edge.
  • The best part is that IIT Kharagpur allows you to change your branch at the end of one year. You can go for this option if you have scored a good CGPA in your first year but your change in choice should not be the sole purpose to join the college or the branch.

In short, I have discussed both the colleges (here IIT Kharagpur wins) and both the branches (here Computer Science wins). So, it solely depends upon the interests and priorities of the student whether to choose Chemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur or CS at IIT Mandi. If you do not enjoy working with codes, then IIT Kharagpur will be the best option for you.

KT
Karthik Tiwari Posted On : March 20th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (2019)

Civil engineering at IIT Ropar is definitely better because IIT Ropar is developing more rapidly than IIT Mandi. IIT Ropar ranks better than IIT Mandi when it comes to NIRF Rankings. In addition to this, IIT Ropar has established its excellence by being ranked 3rd among the new IITs since the last two years.

The table below shows a brief overview of the institutes:

Many of my friends are from IIT Ropar, therefore, I can tell in detail about it.

Faculty -

  • IIT Ropar has a very experienced faculty. In fact, the professors are PhDs holders and even higher studies from well reputed universities.
  • Moreover, the faculty to student ratio at IIT Ropar is 1:9 which is very good.
  • The Director himself has been an MIT Professor.

Academics -

  • The new curriculum at IIT Ropar stands out as it has been designed by experts as per the International Standards.
  • It provides you with a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing your specialization in different branches.
  • For example, at IIT Ropar you can graduate in Mechanical engineering with a specialization in Manufacturing, or, you can have your BTech in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science.
  • It offers specialization to the students in various fields such as Bio medical, CS, Mechanical, Electrical Physics, Chemistry and Humanities along with the BTech Degree.
  • You will find more labs including Tinkering Labs. It has made it mandatory for every student to take courses in Data Structure and working with Arduino.

Because of the freedom to pursue their interests irrespective of their departments, the students build a very dynamic knowledge. This is the reason for placements of many students with a package of 28-30 lpa. Many students from every department have been selected in GSOC as well.

What is the difference between IIIT Delhi and IIT Mandi, in terms of coding culture?

RA
Rishika Aggrawal Posted On : March 17th, 2021
B.Tech from IIIT Delhi

If you're getting IIIT H for coding, then you're definitely going to face some heavy competition although it should be your choice because of its expertise. NIRF has ranked it #43 and IIIT Delhi ranks #58, whereas IIT Mandi ranks #31 the same. Their coding culture is evolving and it can be estimated that their ICPC and GSoC are going to improve a lot in the upcoming times.

Here are some facts for you-

  • IIIT Delhi was established a year before IIT Mandi. It is basically CSE-centered, with marked attention to it. IIT Mandi, on the other hand, has a lot of varied branches and so the coding culture is a bit more advanced at IIIT Delhi.
  • The IIT tag is much sought after, however, being from IIIT is not a bad deal either. At IIIT D a lot of big names like Google, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and Accenture come for recruitments, although your overall performance will decide your placement.
  • The campus at IIIT D is quite beautiful and doesn't lack anything. It has hostels, recreation centers, dining facilities, a library, and an information center. The second phase of construction is ongoing as well.

Here's a comparison table-

Who are famous alumni of IIT Mandi?

CS
Chitra Sen Posted On : April 22nd, 2021
IIT Mandi

IIT Mandi started operating in 2009 only so only a handful of batches have passed the college till now. Despite the small time span, the institute has produced a few well-known alumni. Here is a discussion about some of them.

  • Athar Aamir Khan – Batch (2010 - 2014) of the institute. He is well-known for being the second topper of the prestigious civil services exam in 2015 sharing the podium with his former wife Tina Dabi (who grabbed the first position).
  • Pradeep Seervi – He was the 1st rank holder in GATE (2015) Electrical Engineering. He was also awarded the DAAD scholarship in 2014 and visited the University of Applied Sciences, Zwickau, Germany.
  • Ankush Jindal – He has a Mandi-based start-up, The Solar Labs. He graduated from IIT Mandi in 2017 with a degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
  • Siddharth Gargal – He is the co-founder of The Solar Labs and was a colleague of Ankush Jindal at the CSE branch of IIT Mandi.
  • Anand Dhandhania
  • Chamundeshwar Nadh
  • Omair Azmi
  • Bijon Paul
  • Himanshu Dewan
  • Rohit Goyal
  • Shubham Ajmera

The institute is fairly new, so it is not fair to expect a very large number of famous alumni.

What should I choose for M.Tech in Bio tech, IIT Mandi or NIT Bhopal?

SG
Sandip Ghose Posted On : March 31st, 2021
Studied at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

If you are confused between IIT Mandi or NIT Bhopal, choose IIT as the primary option.

Being an IITian has its own advantages. You will receive more reward and respect from society. One of my relatives from Biotech is pursuing his Ph.D. from Heidelberg Germany Berlin at the age of just 26. He visited almost 21 countries already for academic purposes. He also attended many Ivy league colleges like MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford for conferences.

IIT Mandi is very good at academics. The faculty here are very experienced and friendly in nature. They teach the concepts in a very easy and simple manner.

Also, if you want to pursue higher studies, then choosing IIT will be better.

Which is better, Amity Noida or IIT Mandi?

SK
Saloni Kaushik Posted On : March 16th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (2020)

Better college in what respect? Is it for engineering or any other domain? If you are looking for your choices for Engineering, IIT Mandi is a way better option. Answers to this question depend on various parameters.

Amity Noida:

If you are fond of living in a metro city, then Amity Noida would be a better option to choose. The college itself is reputed and you will get that metro city culture.

  • In Noida, you’ll get access to malls, cafes, clubs, factories, and in fact companies as well.
  • You will get multiple work opportunities during and after graduation if you are in the Delhi NCR region.

IIT Mandi:

On academic grounds IIT Mandi is unbeatable.

  • You will be guided by extremely qualified professors who are always ready to help you out.
  • You will get a platform to brush up your skills and enhance them to a better scale.
  • You will have access to advanced machinery and can take part in modern-day research at IIT Mandi.
  • With respect to placement as well, IIT Mandi has better placement records in comparison to Amity Noida.
  • IIT Mandi has a very beautiful lush green campus which is a cherry on the cake.

Overall, you will never regret your decision to be a part of IIT Mandi if you are not particularly fond of metro- city life.

You must note that all this was for a Science and Engineering program. For non-scientific discipline, Amity Noida is better as IIT Mandi does not offer non-scientific courses. Overall you will see that both the colleges have their own reputation. So, you have to make your own choice based upon your priorities

How many students share a room in IIT Mandi hostels?

IP
Isha Pandey Posted On : March 17th, 2021
Studied Master of Technology in VLSI Design at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

My friend stays at IIT Mandi's hostel for girls and she has a room for herself and the facilities are good. It is an excellent institute, being an IIT, it ranks #31 on the NIRF Engineering ranking list. In 2018, girls had to share rooms and two girls stayed in one room. IIT Mandi has two campuses called the North and South campuses respectively.

You may wish to note these down:

  • You'll be allotted a hostel on the basis of availability, and single, double, and triple occupancy rooms are available.
• The south campus hostels give residence opportunities mostly to Ph.D., MTech, and other postgraduate researchers. The rooms are available with sharing options of 2-3 sharing capacity.
  • The north campus has residential facilities for undergraduate B.Tech, B.Sc students. Rooms here are available as shared options as well as single occupancy.
  • MTech and Ph.D. students can avail the single-room facility at the north campus too if needed.

Here's a table highlighting the important points about the hostels-

Parameters

2

5

Living Cost (INR/Year)

58,000

58,000

As you can see there are more buildings available for boys but the living costs and basic amenities are available in all formats of residencies, be it single, double, or triple.
