How many students share a room in IIT Mandi hostels?

TM
Tithi Mukherjee Posted On : May 26th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

IIT Mandi has a variety of different types of hostels, each with their own occupancy and room arrangements. Generally, students in IIT Mandi's hostels share rooms with one or more other students. The exact number of students per room can vary depending on the campus you are allotted.

IIT Mandi has 2 campuses namely the North Campus and the South Campus.

  • The North campus is usually for Btech students
  • South Campus is mainly for MSc, Mtech, MBA, PhD students

When my sister was in IIT Mandi, first what students were allotted were triple occupancy rooms for boys and double occupancy rooms for girls. Now, the situation is expected to have improved, and there might be double or triple for boys and single for girls.

Usually, the south campus has multiple seater rooms while the North campus has single rooms. Additionally, Ph.D. students are allotted single rooms.

What should I choose considering the branch change opportunities, electrical at IIT Mandi or electrical at IIT Ropar?

PD

There is a branch change provision at IIT Mandi which is very lenient too. So if you are confused with your branch and you wish to change your branch in the future, then you should choose IIT Mandi.

One of my friends was in a similar situation a few years back and he opted for IIT Mandi for its flexible branch change policies. He was able to change his branch to CSE. To change your branch to CSE, you will need a CGPA of around 8.6.

IIT Mandi has a 50% branch change allowance whereas at IIT Roper it is 10%. To know more about the branch change rules you can visit the official website.

Should I take CS in IIT Mandi or EEE in IIT Guwahati?

For every Engineering aspirant, choosing the branch is the most crucial task as it is an important step in shaping your career. I suggest you take your inclinations into consideration. No doubt, it’s difficult to identify your interests right after class 12th.

CSE in IIT Mandi

  • It’s almost been 14 years since the establishment of IIT Mandi and since then it has developed a lot.
  • IIT Mandi has a great faculty base with the Director himself from a CSE background.
  • IIT Mandi’s unique curriculum helps one to learn a lot of interdisciplinary subjects even more than other IITs apart from your core courses. This imparts interdisciplinary knowledge to the students.
  • Coding culture is improving exponentially. The increasing rate of GoSC selections is a testament to the same.
  • Placements are excellent with IIT Mandi's highest package standing at INR 60 LPA & IIT Mandi's average package recorded at INR 25.23 LPA.
  • The placement season witnesses a mix of both domestic and international offers. Recruiters like Flipkart, 1mg, Microsoft, Uber, Amazon, Walmart, etc participated in the placement drive this year.

The other options available with your rank are

  • IIT Guwahati ECE
  • IIT Guwahati MNC

The best way would be to do extensive research about both colleges, make a list of things that you are looking for in your B.Tech program, prioritize and quantify them and then take the final decision.

IS there any provision for branch change at iit mandi?

SD
Sree Dasgupta Posted On : April 26th, 2023
studied Computer Science at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

Yes, there is a provision for branch change at IIT Mandi. The institute allows students to apply for a branch change after their first year of study, subject to certain conditions and availability of seats. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Eligibility: Students who have completed their first year of study and have a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 8.0 are eligible to apply for a branch change.
  • Availability of Seats: Branch change is subject to the availability of seats in the desired branch. The availability of seats may vary from year to year depending on various factors, such as the number of students opting for the same branch.
  • Selection Process: The selection of candidates for branch change is based on their CGPA at the end of the first year and the availability of seats in the desired branch. In case of a tie, the institute may conduct additional tests or interviews to make the final selection.
  • Branch Change Options: The branch change options are limited to those branches that have vacancies and are suitable for the student's academic background and interests. The institute may also impose certain restrictions on branch change, such as not allowing change to certain branches or limiting the number of students who can change to a particular branch.

It is important to note that branch change is a competitive process and not all students who apply may get a chance to change their branch. Therefore, it is advisable to weigh the pros and cons carefully before deciding to apply for a branch change.

How cold is it at IIT Mandi?

TM
Tithi Mukherjee Posted On : May 22nd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

The climate at IIT Mandi does not drop extremely and thus it's bearable in winter.

  • The climate is moderate from August till Mid October. After mid-October, you will witness a drop in the temperatures. But the hostels of IIT Mandi have great insulation facilities so you dont have to worry much about the winters.
  • Vacations start from Dec to Feb mid so you are able to escape the extreme temperatures mostly. The only pain is waking up early in the morning at 8 a.m
  • Second semester starts in mid-February during which the climate usually remains cool till March.
  • After March, the temperature starts rising again and the temperature stays moderate till May. the temperature starts to rise up again. In summer, days will be warm but nights are pretty decent.

Overall, you won't have to deal with extremely cold conditions at IIT Mandi so rest your worries in place.

Is the MS good in IIT Mandi?

VS
Vaibhav Sinha Posted On : May 22nd, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

Rather than talking about MS generally, let's break down the answer into branch-wise IIT Mandi MS programs.

IIT Mandi MS in CS

  • This program is great Anne the majority of the batch either gets placed in good companies or converts their degree to a Ph.D. MS takes 2.5 - 3 years.
  • IIT mandi provides all the prerequisites of MS in CS like a Laptop, a good adviser, and helpful colleagues.

IIT Mandi MS in Electrical Engineering

  • The program is not very good with core companies seeking only B.Tech students and the number of visiting companies is also less.
  • PSUs don’t allow MS/MTech students.
  • Lab facility is poor
  • M.Tech. in power electronics is way better than MS. Because

IIT Mandi MS in Electronics and Communication

  • This branch too is pathetic with a poor placement scenario.
  • The poor placements stem from the fact that IIT Mandi does not offer under-graduation in Electronics.

IIT Mandi MS in Mechanical, Thermal, Design, and Material Science Engineering

  • All these branches are good options if you are planning to go for a Ph.D. Most MS scholars from the school of engineering, after passing out, opted for Ph.D. either abroad, or at older IITs.

Ultimately, MS in IIT Mandi is not a good choice if you are willing to get placed after your Masters. However, for educational and research purposes the program will serve you well.

What does one require to bring with him in IIT Mandi in the first year?

SC
Shreyas Choudhury Posted On : March 17th, 2021
B.Sc from University of Hyderabad

As you may already know that IIT Mandi has two hostels for girls and five for boys. The hostels are good as far as food, basic amenities, and accessibility to important places nearby are concerned. You can apply for a single room or share some on a double or triple occupancy basis.

My friend compiled this list when he joined IIT Mandi, you may find it helpful:

  • The items listed here are very easily available in the campus or city- toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, soap container, water bottle, pen drive, scissors, stapler and pens, paper soap, flip flops, registers, pens, washing powder, shampoo, shaving kit, oil, comb, creams and moisturizers, deodorants, wristwatch, etc.
  • So if you have a bucket, pillow, mattress, and mug at your home, then you can surely bring them along, but if you are not comfortable carrying these along then these are easily available in the city here.
  • Now here is a list of items you will have to bring along with you because they will not be available near the campus or the city- documents like pan card, driving license, etc and photocopies, cloth, file, lock and keys, scientific calculator, bags, umbrella, toolkit, and mobile charger.

As for laptops, CS students should definitely bring their laptops. The campus has a stationery shop that sells pen drives, sheets, registers, and all the useful paraphernalia. So I don't think that'd be an issue. Carefully select items needed.
