Do a PG student get a hostel room in IIT Delhi campus?
IIT Delhi has stopped providing on-campus hostel facilities to PG MTech students specially bound mainly due to the shortage of Hostel rooms inside the campus. Earlier they used to provide off-campus hostels that were in pathetic conditions. But starting from 2020, they have even stopped providing these off-campus hostels and students are expected to arrange for their accommodation.
The students have to go to the hostel inside the campus for mess food and have to roam around without any permanent on-campus residence. Moreover, so much distance between their off campus residence and the college wastes a lot of time and they can hardly spare time for doing additional things like studying for an entrance exam.
New hostels are being built to accommodate MTech students and hopefully, in the coming future you might see better hostel facilities for PG students.
How did you manage your UPSC preparation while doing an M.Tech from IIT Delhi?
The key to manage your UPSC preparation while doing an MTech from IIT Delhi is to score well in your optional subjects rather than General Subjects. A successful candidate scores 275+ in optional whereas an unsuccessful candidate scores around 240. The General Subjects' scores are usually the same.
So prepare well for optional in MTech because you can prepare for GS in just a year. Focus more on optional as it’s a major criterion for selection.
Which is the best hostel in IIT Delhi? Can we choose which hostel we want to stay in?
IIT Delhi has both old as well as new hostels and obviously the new ones have better facilities and infrastructure. The new hostels are Girnar and Udaigiri and have spacious rooms and have 8 floors each with a total of 400 rooms in each hostel. These hostels have a big crowd which means a bigger hostel family to interact with during events. The mess facilities are also considerably better and bigger than old hostels.
The old hostel buildings have only 3-4 floors with smaller rooms and less facilities. But these hostels have a nostalgia associated with many toppers who are successful people today. This spirit keeps the ambiance of these old hostels lively.
Honestly, I wouldn’t say one hostel is better than the other. Every hostel has its unique aspects and cannot be compared.
As for the choice of hostels, no, you cannot choose your hostel. It is allotted to you randomly at the time of admission, every hostel having a mixed bag of students. You cannot change your hostel unless it’s a serious issue.
How is engineering physics at IIT Delhi?

I will suggest you not opt for Engineering Physics in IIT Delhi if you want to study basic stuff like Newtonian Mechanics or electrical circuits or are intrigued by Astrophysics or Cosmology, as in that case IIT Kanpur or IISER Pune, is more suitable for you.
Which would be better, IIT Delhi or an average US university for a PhD?
For PhD students, their advisors are the determining factors for most of their decisions. The compatibility between the two is crucial for good research work and a PhD degree. IIT Delhi does not have very friendly professors and most of them are not willing to help you. This might hinder your performance.
With a good choice of advisor you are likely to succeed at any place be it IIT Delhi or US university. If you opt for a US University, make sure you look through the people you will be working with. The people you work with are more important than the Institute you work at. Being with the right people might make your PhD easier.
Do you regret joining IIT Delhi?
There are no logical reasons to regret joining a prestigious Institute like IIT unless
- You are unable to cope academically and feel behind the class
- You are not able to achieve or learn what you were expecting
- You are unable to socialize or face some serious issues
It’s important to understand that scoring high marks should not be your only agenda as IITs give so many opportunities and you can learn so many new things. Your constant efforts and determination will keep you afloat even when everything is falling.
Make the most out of your 4 years at IIT by doing things such as
- Participate in cultural fests, and clubs,
- Make new friends
- Attend the classes with the right mindset to learn
- Learn to work hard without giving up
- Involve yourself in sports
- Physical exercise at the gym
- Hang out with friends
So, there are so many things you can do at IIT Delhi rather than regretting your decision. The time you will waste regretting will not come back, so why not utilize it to the fullest and live a memorable life.
I am a recent IIT Delhi grad and have competing offers from Google India and Uber India. Which one should I join?
I would rather recommend you go for Uber than join Google (India). A few reasons that justify my opinion are
- Uber offers a better pay scale than Google India
- The work culture and nature at Uber are rather stimulating and will always challenge your abilities
- You can move to bigger companies after gaining experience at Uber but the opposite won't be likely possible.
- Employees at Google India are always leaving either for the US or higher studies and the stability of the job is very low.
- The work environment at Uber is demanding, and exhilarating, posing new challenges every day making it a dynamic one
Basically, the work environment at Google is more stable and monotonous without many challenges which are suitable after you attain a certain age and maturity. Till then you are open to challenges that can be sought at dynamic companies like Uber that will help you grow better.
What can be a better option (I have no interest), IIT Delhi biotech or IIT Kanpur civil?
With no specific area of interest, the best option for you is IIT Delhi Biotechnology. Here are a few points to support my opinion
- Old IITs have the benefit of equal opportunities for all students irrespective of their branch.
- You are eligible for placements in all types of companies including software.
- As a biotechnology student, you get to do internships in various sectors like IT, finance, etc.
- Exceptionally good grades can fetch you good packages
- The quality of college life is better ij IIT Delhi than in Kanpur.
IIT Delhi is the dream college of many owing to the excellent brand name and opportunities it offers. Trust me, once you are inside your branch will hardly matter.
What is it like to study Textile Technology at IIT Delhi?
IIT Delhi Textile department is still in its infancy and unfortunately, is one of the least demanded branches. The scope and opportunities offered are meager. To put it rightly, it does not do justice to the brand name of IIT Delhi.
- During the orientation itself, it’s revealed how almost the entire batch wants to get their branch changed eventually
- The department is located far away from the main campus and other major departments and this segregation is quite demotivating
- The course material is not up to the standards of IIT Delhi and the tremendous coursework just adds to the misery
- The students mug up the concepts mostly rather than understanding them
- The lab work is monotonous and the research opportunities are limited
- The teachers are extremely retarded investing zero effort in increasing the quality of teaching or making it more lively
- Most importantly, the placement scenario of this department is pathetic with no good company ready to recruit students for this branch
Many people think that this branch might somehow open opportunities for them if they involve themselves in extracurricular activities and so but then the entire purpose of the department is negated. Still, for the most desperate, this might be the only option. So, it’s advisable to go to this branch only if it’s the last option you have.
How is the campus life of BITS Pilani main campus when we compare it with IIT Delhi?
BITS Pilani is known for its huge and impressive campus and its beautiful infrastructure combined with top-quality education attracts many aspirants. There are some valid reasons I am stating as to why one should choose BITS Pilani over IIT Delhi
- There are no compulsory attendance rules which give you enough freedom to prioritize things and manage your time well
- The timetable is rather flow-like as it’s designed by the students itself and there are some additional electives apart from Engineering subjects to break the monotony.
- An excellent campus with top-notch infrastructural facilities makes the learning experience more comfortable for the students.
- BITS Pilani offers single rooms to its students from the second year itself giving the students a private dove to function well
- The school lays great emphasis on transforming theoretical knowledge into practice through compulsory internships which are a brilliant experience.
All these reasons convinced my sister to join BITS Pilani and today she is glad she took the decision.
