I have friends from both Thapar and HBTI, so I think I can answer this question.
Here are the recent placement highlights of the institutes.
Institute | Thapar University | HBTI Kanpur |
Average CTC | 8 LPA | 7.18 LPA |
Highest CTC | 43 LPA | 60 LPA |
Major recruiters | IBM, Wipro, Infosys, D.E Shaw India, etc. | Microsoft, Google, Oyo Rooms |
If you are aspiring for chemical technology or related branches then go for HBTI Kanpur and if you want to pursue some core courses then Thapar University is the best option.
Thapar University offers hostel facilities to the enrolled students which are spread over a large area of land. You can opt for two-seaters, three-seaters, and four-seaters rooms as per your requirements and budget.
One of my friends is pursuing his B.Tech from Thapar University and he used to stay in one of the hostels of the university. He has had a very good time there.
I have a few friends from Thapar University and from them, I heard many stories regarding placements. Here is one of such stories.
One of their seniors faced some initial problems in the placement phase. He was the best in networking and web development in the entire college. He had such skills and knowledge regarding the course that he was considered better than even some of the faculties. He was the only student in the entire college to make it to (GSOC) Google Summer of Code. In spite of all this, he had a CGPA of 6 because he didn’t just study for scoring so he was very carefree with the subjects he was not interested in, which brought down his CGPA.
Initially, he was left out to even participate in many placement interviews, due to his CGPA. Almost 75 percent of the CSE batch was placed with some companies in some cases they also got multiple offers but he was left out.
In the next phase of placements, there was a company offering consulting roles. He was not shortlisted for the interview because of his CGPA. He was sleeping in his room when he got a call from the PR saying he has an interview in 15 minutes.
What happened was, the company officials called PR and told them they have a technical post and they were looking for the best candidate and his name was coined. He wowed the officials in his interview and got the job offer. But he didn’t take it since the job profile didn’t interest him.
Following that he got 3 more internship offers and 3 more placement offers because he was specially mentioned by that one company.
You can enroll at Thapar University through a JEE Main rank. Besides, there are 3 cut-off lists released and 2 separate spot rounds, depending upon the availability of seats. You are required to fill the registration form, as per requirements. This is solely for the B.Tech branch.
You can also secure admission at Thapar University even if you are pursuing any B.Tech course from any other university. You will have to appear for the 1st year December Test. The syllabus is very closely related to JEE Main. However, the exam level is quite low.
In case you are an MCA aspirant, then you can directly go on to take the MCA entrance exam conducted by Thapar University. My cousin, after he secured the rank 96, could not acquire admission because the seats of the university typically got filled until the 46th rank.
To add more, you are required to take the AIEEE exam for securing an engineering seat, while a direct entrance exam for MCA. Hope this helps answer your question, wish you all the best!
If you are passionate about science and research work then you can opt for biotechnology as it provides several career scopes. The biotechnology specialty is the most notable in terms of revenue and employment.
The table shows a brief overview of the institution:
Particulars |
Thapar University |
Lowest Salary |
Rs. 1.8 lakhs |
Average Salary |
Rs. 4 lakhs |
Highest Salary |
Rs. 7.2 lakhs |
If the student wants to get good research and publication opportunities as well as a good placement opportunity then opt for biotechnology. Overall Thapar University is a potential choice.
Since I have friends from both VIT and Thapar, I think I can answer this.
Thapar University:
VIT:
VIT Vellore is yet to be at par with Thapar University. Since VIT takes in a huge number of students, the placement quality is declining over the years. The average package at VIT is around 2-3 LPA.
Unless VIT Vellore is closest to your place do not opt for it. Thapar University is better in comparison to VIT Vellore. Hence, go for TU without any hesitation.
LNMIIT Jaipur would be a better option than Thapar University. There are certain factors as to why I think so.
Placement highlights
Categories | Thapar University | LNMIIT Jaipur |
Course Fee | 13.23 lakh | 12.36 lakh |
Highest CTC offered | INR 25 LPA | INR 23 LPA |
Average CTC offered | INR 16 LPA | INR 12 LPA |

If the student is inclined towards CSE, it is better to go somewhere with good coding cultures and receive good packages. Thapar Institute is increasing its number of seats every year, one may be lost in such a large student batch. You can look for more facts and talk to the student currently enrolled in both institutions.
Due to the increased student intake, the cut-offs for COE went down to 100 marks for Punjab and 130 marks for outside Punjab candidates, in the last few years. Here is the cutoff trend for COE.
Year | Cutoff Percentile |
2019 | 89 |
2018 | 84 |
As the seats are increasing, there is a probability that the cut-offs might decline further. The cut-off will be around 90 marks for Punjab and 115 marks for outside Punjab candidates.
It will be better to attend the spot counseling irrespective of your chance of admission as it is uncertain. You might be lucky to get your favorite branch at Thapar.
The cut-offs in Thapar University vary greatly as it completely depends upon the number of seats available in that particular discipline.
I could assist you with the Thapar University cut-off after manual rounds for CSE (animation) and CSE (machine learning and analysis). I hope it helps you and also does your side of the research too.
Thapar University 2022 cutoff for CSE was as follows.
Category | Cutoff |
General | 98.67 |
SC | 82 |
ST | 89.67 |
Usually, the required cutoff for CSE remains above 97 percentile. Getting admission is easier if you are from Panjab. Students from Panjab domicile get some relaxation. However, it doesn’t usually go below 95 percentile.
