How is metallurgy at iit roorkee?

KB
Keshav Behera Posted On : April 14th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Here are a few aspects through which the credibility of the Metallurgy branch at IIT Roorkee can be discussed

Institute: You will find a diverse peer group of geniuses that will add to your learning experience. Additionally, the campus is located in a beautiful area, and there are many resources available to help students adjust to college life. It’s the best option after IIT B, D, K or Kgp and of course, IISc.

Curriculum: The curriculum of Metallurgy is poor with no diverse approach. The topics covered are taught and studied through rote memorization and no practical application is done. Very few material courses are taught. The fact that only one core job offer was made recently that too by a small steel industry, is enough to determine its credibility. The majority of the batch ends up in IT or Analytics. If you are serious about Material, I suggest going for a Master, that too outside India.

People in the department: Everyone including the staff, professors, and students is very laid back and least interested in anything in general. The staff and professors pay no heed to the complaints lodged by students and the students especially seniors are equally dumb and lack even basic knowledge.

Job prospects: The only way to get a job for students of this department is to learn to code, or else you will remain unplaced. You can also go for GATE, CAT, MS, or Ph.D. Some students even start preparing for Government exams like UPSC, SSC, etc.

My advice to you would be to go for Metallurgy only if you are genuinely interested and want to get MS. A decent CGPA might help you fetch a few company tests and interviews but no jobs. Irrespective of it all, IIT Roorkee does offer an excellent college life experience and if you have no better choice, then go for Metallurgy and prepare yourself well for the consequences.

Why average salary of IIT Roorkee M.Tech (CSE) is similar to tier-3 (or average) engineering colleges?

AS
Anuj Sinha Posted On : April 14th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2021)

Sadly, most companies prefer UG students over PG students because they can get the same job done with a smaller package and they are more flexible than MTech students. There are mainly two types of people who opt for MTech

  • Research enthusiasts who target Ph.D.
  • People who weren’t able to land a good package after BTech

As far as placements are concerned, those who want to pursue a Ph.D. eventually have zero interest in placements while those who are looking for a job consider an MTech degree as a door to better opportunities and packages.

While some companies offer similar packages and profiles to both BTech and MTech students, most other companies discriminate between them. It’s sad to admit that most companies don’t prefer MTexh students over BTech students. However, some students with exceptionally good performance or skills may land a package of around INR 10 LPA. Other students receive low packages bringing down the overall average CTC of the Institute. This is why the average salary of MTech students at IIT Roorkee is very much similar to that of below-average institutes.

What should I choose: IIT Roorkee metallurgy or NIT Warangal/Trichy CSE?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 6th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

IIT Roorkee, NIT Trichy, and NIT Warangal are well-established institutes in India. The scope of metallurgy is comparatively lower than that of CSE. IIT Roorkee mainly concentrates on textual learning and does not give the students exposure to practical learning. They are using the practice of mugging up the lessons without having a clear understanding of the topic. The placement is very poor here; the students from the metallurgy department usually end up in data analytics and coding.

So CSE at NIT Warangal and Trichy would be a better choice.

How many droppers are there in IIT-Roorkee?

RS
Raghavendra Sachdeva Posted On : April 12th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

I asked a friend who was in a non-circuital branch regarding the dropping out situation among his batchmates. According to him, out of 50, 30 students dropped out. The number of boys dropping out is more than girls, around 25 out of 42. This situation is similar in all the non-circuital branches. The number of droppers increases as you go to the least demanded branches.

Here are a few reasons why students tend to drop out of college

  • The cream students work hard and score excellent marks and then opt for branch change to coveted branches like CSE, ECE, MNC, and EE.
  • The droppers, left with no chance, decide to go to their dream college even if they have to take a less preferred branch. Freshers on the other hand give themselves a second chance.

As a general trend, one can observe a high number of dropouts in less preferred branches whereas the exact opposite situation is in most coveted branches. However, it’s important to note that this is just a general observation and not a fixed criterion. One may find many droppers in top branches too.
