SG

For UG girls IIT KGP has two main halls of residence: Sarojini Naidu Hall (SN) and Mother Teresa Hall(MT).

SN Hall

The Hall firmly believes in its motto: Sanskrita Striya Shakti. Some highlights of this Hall are

  • This is the most lively and oldest hall at the institute which has managed to promote both academics and social and cultural activities in the form of events and competitions, organized by students, Gymkhana. The students of this hall are majorly involved in the spring fest, Kshitij, etc.
  • The hall is divided into A, B, H, E, F, G, N, NR, W, and S blocks in four different buildings.
  • The Hostel boasts its own basketball court, a well-equipped gym for health freaks, and table tennis facilities.
  • Singing and dancing activities are practiced in the music room which has all the necessary facilities for the same.
  • The hall also has its own student-driven library that issues the required books to all the wingmates for a complete semester.
  • Food at this hostel is pretty good, and there is a night canteen food stall and a Nescafe within the hall that satisfies the untimely cravings of the hostellers.
  • There are two common rooms; an old one and a comparatively new one that has a TV Connection, projector screen and is well furnished
  • You get the privilege to stay at the same hall where famous personalities like Dr Parvati Dev (B.S.1968) Director, Stanford University School of Medicine, and President, IIT Foundation, Dr Nina Saxena (B Tech 1992), stayed.

MT Hall

This hall is similar in almost all aspects to SN Hall. Specifically talking about girls, the hostels are safe and there is a sense of freedom like no other.

Which is better IIT Guwahati CSE or IIT Delhi EE or IIT KGP CSE 5yrs?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

In my opinion, an IIT KGP CSE dual degree is a better option than IIT Guwahati CSE. Here’s why

  • You get an additional degree in just one or two years
  • You don’t have to sit for another entrance exam like GATE
  • Companies that open profiles for BTech also open the same profiles for Dual Degree students.

IIT Guwahati is also a good option for CSE. However, one should opt for IIT Delhi EE only if

You are confident that one will be able to change branch within a year. This is because you will end up studying CS courses with external coaching.

To secure a job, the best options are CSE or MBA. For MBA, your branch does not really matter, only your institute does.

What is criteria for taking minor at IIT Kharagpur?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

Applying for a minor is possible only at the beginning of the 3rd year autumn semester provided that your CGPA is 7.5+. But I suggest you start taking courses related to your minor from the 2nd year autumn semester itself.

  • Make sure your CGPA is 8+ by the end of each semester, else your minor will be canceled.
  • On the basis of the requirements given in the minor curriculum list, make a good choice of courses.
  • You can change your departmental elective by approaching your faculty advisor for the same. He/she will login to his/her ERP and add the desired subject to your list.
  • One needs to take at least additional 3 or 4 courses to earn a minor in another department.
  • You are required to maintain your ACGPA (additional CGPA) as well as CGPA (additional SGPA) 6+ once you have registered for minors.

Plan your semesters in such a way that you have available slots for that specific subject.

Which is better, mining in IIT Kharagpur or mechanical in IIT Patna?

A
Admin Posted On : June 20th, 2024

First of all you need to lose this ideology that mechanical has more scope and mining has less scope. Every field has top notch research going in it and provides dynamic and challenging work opportunities.

I also had the same dilemma and I chose Mining at IIT Kharagpur over other departments for to following reasons:-

  • IIT Kharagpur is famous for its Mining branch which is one of the core branches in b.tech.
  • IIT Kharagpur is ranked 6th in the NIRF ranking while IIT Patna is Ranked 41th.
  • IIT Kharagpur has a Median Salary of 16 LPA while IIT Patna is at 12 LPA.
  • IIT Kharagpur is one of the oldest institutes in India established in 1951.
  • Coal India also comes for recruitment at IIT Kharagpur and international companies like Rio Tinto come for recruitment process.

Is IIT Kharagpur a good option for a South Indian?

NG
Nikhil Goal Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

Regardless of the fact whether you are North Indian or South Indian, IIT Kharagpur is the dream college for many engineering aspirants. It is a premier engineering institute with a legacy in academics that is unmatched by any other engineering college. Spread across a massive 2200 acres, the institute offers a dream campus life coveted by many.

  • Academics: IIT Kharagpur is well known for its excellent Academy environment offered by the most learned faculty in the country. There is an abundance of opportunities for those who are serious about their careers and want to make the best out of their college life.
  • Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur has a decent infrastructure with the Central library being the highlight of the institute. Additionally, the National Digital library is also a unique part of the institute and one can solve almost all his doubts here.
  • Hostel: IIT Kharagpur has a great accommodation facility with around 18 hostels for boys and five hostels for girls accommodating around 7000 students. Since the majority of the student pool is from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, a South Indian may find it easy to befriend people.
  • Sports: Sports freaks can pursue this passion as IIT Kharagpur lays great emphasis on the holistic development of the students which includes sports facilities like poker. Inter-hall sports competitions are conducted to develop the spirit between students.
  • Food: A South Indian may be a bit disappointed as far as the food of IIT Kharagpur is concerned . This is because potato is a necessary ingredient of most of the dishes served which gives it a more North Indian taste. Honestly, speaking, the quality of food served in IIT Kharagpur hostels is not on par with that of food served at other IITs. So you eventually had to resort to the canteen within the campus to satisfy your South Indian cravings.
  • Miscellaneous: the unlimited network facilities, DC++, and the laid-back environment, make it a more viable option than other IITs.

To sum up, your town or origin does not really matter as IIT Kharagpur is an excellent opportunity for anyone that will change your personality forever.

The integrated economics Course from IIT Kharagpur has a wide scope. This course comes under the umbrella of the humanities and social science department. Some of the many prospects offered by this course are

  1. Higher studies: A student who is inclined towards higher studies can opt for Masters in Economics from any prestigious college in India and abroad and can even get a PhD degree provided that he has sufficient knowledge of economics, a stable GPA and some excellent publications.
  2. Government jobs: The scope of the score spreads to the government sector as well with jobs like RBI, Indian economic service or civil services that help you serve your country. The best part about these jobs is that you can also apply for study leave and pursue higher studies on official holidays.
  3. Software developer: Unlike the general misconception that only CS, E,C, EE students can become software developers, this course too can help you become one. While it is true that the top companies like Google and Microsoft won’t let you sit for placements, you can become a software developer for average banks. Later, you can target technical giants that don’t judge employees on the basis of the branch.
  4. MBA: This is a very common combination. Many economic students target IIMs or other business schools to pursue MBA. Moreover, with a non-engineering background, you can always have an upper hand in B-school admissions.
  5. Data Analyst/Scientist: This is the most common job profile of IIT Kharagpur students who have done an economics majors. Moreover, with the increased demand for AI and machine learning, this has become one of the most appealing fields today.
  6. Finance: The integrated economy course at IIT Kharagpur has many subjects related to finance and mathematics. This makes the student suitable for finance roles and you are likely to become a quantitative analyst.
  7. Consulting/operations: Consulting and Operation roles are available to random students, irrespective of their branch.

The best part about the economics degree is that you have a lot of free time at your hand and can explore other fields, unlike engineering students who are always busy with their coursework. Moreover, if you’re not sure about any particular branch, then Economics can definitely be a good choice.

Which is better, IIT Kharagpur or IIT Bhilai? Why?

AD
Ajay Diwan Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kharagpur

Comparing 2 IITs is illogical as every IIT is unique in its own way. Because of the difference in the duration of the establishment, one might have a better alumni network than the other. The same is the case between IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bhilai. Both are excellent Engineering colleges, yet the former being the oldest IIT has a much more elaborate alumni network.

The distinguishing feature includes some eminent alumni like the CEO of Google Sundar Pichai, Jeetu from the Kota factory, Gaurav Taneja aka flying beast, Biswa, etc. IIT KGP is well known for its amazing coding culture. It has great faculty and societies that help in the holistic development of students.

What is it like to study computer science at IIT Kharagpur?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 27th, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

CSE branch of top IITs is the most coveted branch of engineering aspirants in India. My sister got the splendid opportunity for the same but claimed that in reality the IIT brand name is overhyped and does not deserve so much attention.

IIT Kharagpur indeed had the best professors, lab facilities, high-tech classrooms, and an extensive range of courses, but like every coin has two sides, IIT KGP has its share of disappointments as well. There are some extremely bad professors and classes.

Much is expected from the students claiming them to be a part of the rich IIT family while the administration is somehow below average and the teaching standards are also deteriorating. You surely will get a good experience but don’t over expect it.

AD
Ajay Diwan Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kharagpur

My friend received a call in Cryogenic on the basis of her GATE score in the Instrumentation exam. The entire interview lasted for 12 minutes. The panelists initially cross-checked the GATE score with her and then began the interview.

They asked her where she hailed from and then posed a number of technical questions like

  • What motivated you to do research in Cryogenic?
  • What is the use of Instrumentation in Cryogenic technologies?
  • How are acoustic impedances compensated in industrial-type measurements?
  • What is the importance of the Gauge factor in low-temperature measurements?
  • What fuels are used for Oxidation in engines?
  • What was your final year project?

Based on her experience, the maximum questions were based on her research work only so you need to prepare well in the same.
