The civil (B.Tech) branch of IIT Bhubaneswar began in 2008. The civil branch is part of the School of Infrastructure. In 2011, the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 was passed. According to this act, IIT Bhubaneswar is part of the eight New IITs established across India.
The B.Tech Civil Engineering course was one of the first courses that were offered. Today IIT Bhubaneswar ranks at 17 by NIRF, showcasing the well-qualified professors and facilities it offers. There are forty-eight gender-neutral seats and ten women-only seats in the department. The branch also provides learning in management, humanities, communication skills, arts, general studies. The students thus go through rigorous intellectual and personality development.
