Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

If you're considering pursuing a computer science course, you may have come across the perception that Kanpur offers the best academically but falls behind other cities such as Bombay, Delhi, and Madras due to its geographic location. While this statement may hold some truth, it's important to understand the context behind it.

Here are some important points to consider:

  • Kanpur, a city located in the northern part of India, is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering colleges, IIT Kanpur. It offers a strong curriculum and has a reputation for producing some of the brightest minds in the field of computer science.
  • However, when it comes to IT companies setting up their offices, they tend to prefer cities like Bombay and Delhi due to their geographic location and infrastructure. These cities are often seen as hubs for the IT industry, and hence, they attract more companies than Kanpur.
  • Students who are looking for better placement opportunities may prefer to study in cities like Delhi or Bombay. While Madras is also a popular choice, its location in the southern part of India may not appeal to some students.
  • From an academic standpoint, Delhi and Madras are no different from each other. Both cities have renowned institutions, such as IIT Delhi and IIT Madras respectively, that offer excellent computer science programs.
  • It's important to note that the perception that Kanpur offers the best computer science program academically is subjective and may vary depending on individual preferences and career goals.

While Kanpur may be seen as academically superior, its placement opportunities may not be as strong as other cities like Bombay or Delhi. Ultimately, it's important to consider all aspects of a program, including its curriculum, location, and placement opportunities before making a decision.

CS, IIT Kanpur

If you are genuinely interested in CS, then go for IIT Kanpur rather than IIT Delhi or IIT Madras. Don’t judge IIT Kanpur only based on opening rank. Do detailed research on all the institutes. Following are some of the parameters based on which you should compare the institutes.

  • Faculty
  • Facility
  • Alumni base
  • Academics

If you look at these factors, you will see, IIT Kanpur is way ahead of IIT D and IIT M. IIT M only have a higher opening rank due to their locational advantage.

Here is a brief overview of the CS program offered by IIT Kanpur.

Highest CTC 62 LPA
No of recruiters 300
Major recruiters Infosys, IBM, Deloitte
Course fee 8.30 lakhs

The problem is that all the big tech companies are located in and around big cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, etc. and Kanpur is a relatively smaller town. This hampers the placements a bit. But in the long run, the things you will learn during your study will help you more and that is precisely the reason why IIT Kanpur has a very successful alumni base.

I would suggest you should give course curriculum and faculty preference over immediate placements or geographical location.
