Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has been ranked 29th amongst top engineering colleges in India by NIRF. While IIT Dharwad hasn't been ranked yet by NIRF.

Campus:

Thapar University

  • It is spread over 250 acres, accommodating around 6000 students.
  •  International collaborations for academics, research projects and other allied activities with universities like Kumamoto, RMIT, Brown University.

IIT Dharwad

The main campus is under construction as of now, proposed to be spread across 530 acres, the students have to stay in a transit campus. Hence, all facilities cannot be availed yet.

Placements:

IIT Dharwad:

  • Since the institute is new, the first batch graduated in 2020 with the highest PPO offered by Microsoft at INR 80,000 per month.
  • The highest package offered to CSE students was INR 15 lakhs per annum
  • Average package offered was INR 8 lakhs per annum.
  • Of the total students who applied for placements, 90% were placed in 2020.
  • Top recruiters include Adobe, Amazon and Microsoft amongst 30 others

Thapar University:

  • About 264 different recruiters visit the institute annually and the college has a stellar record of 90%+ placements for the last six years.
  • The highest package offered at the institute is INR 43 lakhs per annum with 971 students placed so far.
  • About 90% of the B. Tech students and 60% of the MCA students are placed annually.
  • Companies like Infosys, OYO, HSBC, Azcom, Wipro, etc. hire students every year.

Finally, when it boils down to making a choice between the two institutes, students should consider their area of interest, accessibility, facilities offered. While IITs do have a brand name, Dharwad is relatively newly established and on the other hand, Thapar University does provide promising placements and is one of the oldest private institutions.
