Here are some tips that can help your first semester at Syracuse University smoother.

  • Don’t commit to a major immediately. You don’t need to worry if you don’t know what you want to do. Know that almost everyone is on the same boat. Freshman year is best for experiments. Try to get good grades in those easy first-semester classes, so that you will have many options open when you are ready to make a decision.
  • Explore everything that you find interesting, but don’t try to fit in fast to avoid being alone.
  • Living with a stranger is difficult for obvious reasons. So, try to adjust and support them in little ways when you can.
  • At Syracuse, Fall stays only for a limited time. Try to be outside as much as possible in the Fall.
  • Winters are pretty bad at Syracuse. The city has the largest snowplow in the world. So prepare accordingly. Invest in the best winter boots and coats.

You can checkout Feagan for good food and beer. Their nachos and chicken salads are pretty good. Roji Tea Lounge in downtown Syracuse has the best Japanese cookies and tea.

Starting out in a new university is always a unique experience for any student. It is really fine to be a little anxious about the social, cultural as well as educational life you would be getting into and your plans to fit into the new university.

But first thing first; do not overburden yourself in thinking what you want to major in. Instead, follow the elimination method and start ruling out the majors in which you do not want to study. Before the end of freshman year, you would definitely figure out your preferred area of study. And do not worry if you don’t get your preferred school. There are plenty of other things in the campus to keep you happy.

  • You can also follow a sports team. You could look for less popular sports such as lacrosse, soccer, boxing, rowing which are as interesting as popular sports such as basketball and football.
  • You should also consider joining some of the clubs of your passion such as photography, skiing, snowboarding, dance, philanthropy, jewelry making, culinary arts etc.
  • If you have passion for writing you should consider joining The Daily Orange. You even have clubs for greek life! Still if you do not find a club of your choice, you could even initiate to start one.
  • If you are an adventure junkie, the skiing and snowboarding clubs regularly visit the Greek Peak, Toggenburg and the Labrador Mountain.
  • Outside of campus, you can visit the Green Lakes state park and the Wegman’s! Dinosaur BBQ

There are also plenty of thrift shops for your shopping experiences and many old diners to keep your tummy happy. The weather is unpredictable and you should be prepared for it. It can get really chilly and windy, so bring in a pair of warm clothes, a coat with a hoodie is preferable.

Finally, the dorm rooms are almost always located at inconvenient places for freshman students. So do not worry about it, enjoy your first year and experience the campus life.
