The procedure of application for a winter internship in IIM Ahmedabad is simple. But you need to be smart enough to get a reply from the professors.

  • First, you need to pick your area of interest from any one of the domains that IIM Ahmedabad offers.
  • Do some prior work related to your area of interest.
  • Make a CV that showcases your interests and career goals.
  • Write a cover letter that you are going to send to the professor. Keep your mail short and precise. Naturally, IIM Ahmedabad professors get a lot of emails, so your mail should interest them.
  • Don’t send the same cover letter to all the professors. Get to know the interest areas of the professors and modify your cover letter accordingly and send a mail only if your interest area clashes.

Also, don’t forget to mentions details regarding your availability, accommodation, and stipend details in the mail.

One of my friends had completed a one-month internship at IIMA in December 2016. The following points are based on her experience.

  • Good CV: One of the most important factors is to have an exciting and well-laid out CV. This should entail your skillset and experience in a clear and designed manner. Professors will not have the time to pay close attention to every CV, so it becomes necessary to be precise.
  • Go through the website: Study the IIMA website efficiently. It will feature a list of professors and their field of study. You can make a note of certain factors like their area of expertise, email ID, the research papers they have worked on, and projects that they may be currently working on. This will help you get a better understanding of which professor you would like to study or work under.
  • Cover Letter: Create a brief but interesting covering letter that you will have to send to the respective professor, depending upon your field of study. This should have well-listed information about why you would like to take up this internship, a few details about your skill sets, relevant experience, and what you are looking to learn from this opportunity. This is key to making a good impression.
  • Research Papers by Faculty: While doing your research on the website, if a particular project or research paper by a professor catches your eye, be sure to include questions or opinions regarding the said topic in your cover letter. This will further help your profile stand out.
  • Customization: If you are a student who is sending out emails to multiple professors seeking an internship, be sure to customize each mail as per the said professors’ profile.

While not all professors may respond back affirmatively due to various reasons, as they might be out of town or may have different requirements, such as a master’s student for internship- do not be disheartened. Keep trying and you will surely find something that fits your profile.
