Which is better, IIT Delhi or IIT Madras?
Both institutes are elite in their unique ways and no one can be compared to another. So it’s better to determine the right one based on personal preferences. Some common points of difference based on common aspects are
- Location: While Delhi has a central location, IIT Madras is located in South India. For many, location is a matter of personal preference and thus it’s important to determine your own needs. Sometimes the opportunities offered also vary from location to location.
- Academics: A wide range of programs are offered by both institutes covering areas of engineering, science, and humanities. Talk to your seniors to determine which courses suit you best.
- Faculty: Both IITs have an excellent faculty pool with diverse research interests and areas of expertise.
- Infrastructure: Both IITs have excellent facilities with top-notch classrooms, well-stacked libraries, highly equipped laboratories, and a wide range of entertainment facilities.
Both institutes give a strong edge to each other in almost all aspects and thus the final decision should be made based on specific goals Sc interests and priorities.

IIT Madras is better. In terms of academics, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras are on a similar level. But IIT Madras placements are comparably better. According to 2022 placement highlights, the average CTC for the institute was INR 22 LPA. IIT Madras has a better startup culture as well. If you want to have your own start-up in the future, it is the right place.
Both IIT Delhi and IIT Madras are among the top engineering colleges in India. But given a choice, you should choose the latter.

My sister was a former student of IITM; thereby, she has limited knowledge of IITD. She often tells me that the choice completely depends on the students' aspects, i.e. how you want to compare these two institutes. It can be mentioned that each of these institutes has its own merits. In the following, some aspects are listed.
- If the student considers the placement statistics, then IITD is far better. Although IITM is not so far behind.
- Each and every IIT has its own specificity. My sister always tells me that studying in IITM will lead the student towards its personal development along with skills.
- There are a lot of entrepreneurship opportunities that thrive inside the campus of IITM; thus, it represents an extraordinary start-up culture. So, if the student has strong interpersonal skills or wants to start their own business, this institute is the right place to start their career.
- Another important thing is that IITM is situated in the centre of the city, but the student can’t go out as the temperature here is very hot as well as humid. The temperature inside the campus is hardly 1-2 degrees Celsius lower than the surrounding as it is basically part of a reserve forest.
Thus, if the student is interested in taking admission here, they must go through several posts about this institute that denotes the academic culture or the reputed institute's cultural life. The scenario beauty of this institute is awesome.
My sister also told me that if the students love natural beauty, they can take admission to IITM. But if they prefer girls, then they can select IITD or IITB.
