What is the probable cut off marks in NEET for CMC Vellore?

MC

Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore

I suggest you look for another college if you aren’t a Christian because it’s very tough for a Hindu to get admission at CMC Vellore. Here is the cutoff and the step-by-step admission

  • To get admission to CMC Vellore, you need to score 50 percentile in NEET.
  • Candidates willing to get admission into UG courses at CMC Vellore must appear in a Computer Based Test (CBT) followed by special assessments and interviews
  • The final selection will be done on the basis of the candidate's performance in this test.
  • CMC Vellore's total intake is 100 and the seat breakdown is as follows

Overall, NEET is not the only necessary factor that is considered while selecting students for CMC Vellore. You should ace their exams and perform well in the interviews to increase your chances of admission.

Which one is the best AIIMS or CMC Vellore for an MBBS?

AB

lives in New Delhi

One of my friends was in a similar dilemma. He considered the following points while making his decision

  1. Most AIIMS undergraduates settle in the US or pursue higher education in top colleges in India while CMC graduates prefer CMC for their higher education only.
  2. Students of CMC are required to do bonds in mission hospitals so their higher education gets delayed. But this instills in them a strong sense of community-oriented healthcare. They tend to work in remote places of India without any personal glory. An AIIMS student can hardly be seen doing community service.
  3. AIIMS graduates publish more when compared to CMC graduates.
  4. CMC students get better hands-on experience and hence fare better in terms of clinical and Surgical skills. Right from the second year, they start assisting postgraduates in clinical work.
  5. If you are a non-Christian, it will be difficult to go through the entire training without a mission hospital

Ultimately, make a choice based on your demographics, preferences, and goals in life.

How is life at CMC, Vellore as an undergraduate?

Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore

CMC Vellore is among the top 5 medical colleges in India. The unique aspect that sets it apart from other medical colleges is that it just doesn't make you a good doctor but also a good person. It focuses on the holistic development of the students such that earning money is not their end goal.

The second most appealing aspect is the faculty pool who are extremely eager to impart education and share their knowledge and experience with their students. The learning facilities are top-notch, the labs are well-equipped and the patient flow is also good.

Another good thing about the institute is that the patients are kind enough to let students interact with them and examine them, which is not the case in most big colleges. This is also why CMC Vellore students have better clinical exposure.

The hospital receives many complicated and rare cases because it’s a tertiary care center, so there are ample opportunities for research. You can approach any faculty member if you are interested in starting a project and they will guide you.

CMC Vellore has many exchange and elective programs with prestigious institutes like Karolinska Institute and Uppsala (both Sweden), NUS (Singapore), Kyoto University (Japan), places in Australia, as well as IISc Bangalore. This strengthens its alumni base that now spread across the globe in various positions in hospitals, governments, the WHO, etc.

CMC Vellore's unique trait is its focus on community health and development. Students are made aware of the problems that rural and urban India is facing right from the beginning.

The college gives equal importance to extracurriculars and students can be seen involved in many activities like music, dance, drama, and various sports.

CMC Vellore is an amazing choice in terms of academics, opportunities, exposure, and experiences.

I am Hindu. I want to pursue my postgraduate studies in CMC Vellore. But people say CMC is only for Christians. Is it so? Can a Hindu join?

Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore

A Hindu friend of mine completed her MS in General Surgery at CMC Vellore. Initially, everyone dissuaded her from considering CMC Vellore but she was adamant about it and finally got admission. She says she had the best experience of her life despite having experience at several top colleges. She was amazed by the dedication of the medical and non-medical staff.

Here is the seat breakdown for MBBS at CMC Vellore:

Quota

Categories

Total no. of seats

Management Quota

Open

2

Minority Network

38

Staff Quota

10

Government Seats

State Christian Minority Quota

20

Govt. Quota

30

Your religion does not matter but what matters is if you have done UG, internship, and non-PG residency at CMC and whether you are sponsored. Even some Hindus get sponsored by the local missionary hospital or CMC hospital itself and compete for sponsored seats. So being a Hindu won’t necessarily affect your chances of admission to CMC Vellore.

Are only Christians allowed in CMC Vellore for MBBS?

A
Admin Posted On : May 3rd, 2024

I completed my MBBS from CMC Vellore in the year 2018 as a Hindu candidate.

I have simplified the MBBS seat distribution system at CMC Vellore for your understanding.

  • Management Seats- 50% of the total are management seats. These are divided into open seats, minority network seats and CMC Vellore staff seats.
  • Government Seats- The remaining 50% seats are filled by the Tamil Nadu Government from the State merit list of NEET UG exam. 30% of these seats are allotted to Tamil Nadu students (this includes other forms of reserved seats).

20% of seats are filled by Christian students belonging to Tamil Nadu.

I have attached a screenshot from the CMC Vellore official MBBS Admission Bulletin 2024 for your reference:

CMC MBBS Seats

So to answer you, CMC Vellore does offer MBBS seats to non-Christian students. But the number of such seats is low. CMC Vellore is a Christian minority institution. For this reason, the majority of its MBBS and PG seats are reserved for Christian candidates. But a small number of seats can be filled by candidates of other faiths as well.

What is it like being a doctor in CMC, Vellore?

A

I am a doctor at CMC Vellore, and I have been practicing in CMC for 5 years. Certain factors make CMC Vellore an ideal place to get your medical training from.

Here are some advantages of working as a doctor at CMC-

  1. The CMC Vellore staff is highly disciplined (right from the cleaning staff to the director of the institute).
  2. CMC follows World class treatment protocols that are updated regularly. The CMC faculty regularly visits foreign medical institutes, and foreign faculty is frequently invited to CMC.
  3. The professors make sure to teach moral values to their students. Official discussions on moral and ethical values are held each week.
  4. There is excellent cooperation among doctors of different departments, and one gets round the clock support from each and every doctor (even if they are not on duty).
  5. At CMC, all the patient reports can be accessed from any corner of the hospital. This saves a lot of the doctors’ time.
  6. Most of the doctors at CMC consider it their duty to look after each and every patient. The doctors work without ego, and carry a humble attitude.

Other than the advantages of working at CMC Vellore, here are some disadvantages of this institution-

  1. The huge workload can get extremely exhausting at times.
  2. Personal life suffers, and there’s no clear boundary line between personal and working hours.
  3. Academic discussions are limited during routine work. Most departments do not encourage questions on how a particular treatment evolved, and the possible future developments.
  4. Some departments are too overburdened to produce research work. Because of this, the amount of research publications is low in comparison to the high medical knowledge and patient load

Having said that, I wouldn’t deny that CMC still produces a phenomenal amount of quality research material.

  1. The waiting list is very long, especially for patients with cancer.

This is my experience of working as a doctor at CMC Vellore. Overall, I would say that CMC has offered me a rich and vast exposure in the field of medicine.

Which is currently the best medical college after AIIMS Delhi and CMC Vellore?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 21st, 2023

The criteria for the best college may vary from person to person depending on your hometown, your goals, and your interests. Rankings alone cannot define a college as best or worst. Rankings-wise, AIIMS Delhi is considered to be the best medical college in India. But logically speaking it isn’t a very good choice for a South Indian who would have to travel away from their homeland and work again as hard to secure a PG seat. For them, JIPMER is a much better choice with an internal PG quota advantage and proximity to home.

Moreover, if you are a North Indian, CMC Vellore isn’t a very good choice either as you will have to travel away from home, learn a new language, and establish bonds. So for them, MAMC or VMMC is a better option. So the best college actually depends on what you want to do after college. For instance, AIIMS Delhi is a great choice if you want to pursue the USMLE route. It will provide excellent exposure and opportunities to its students.

In my opinion, the best options after AIIMS and CMC Vellore are JIPMER>MAMC>Seth GS, Mumbai>AFMC. These colleges are considered among the top 5 in the country after AIIMS and CMC Vellore.

How much stipend does in fellowship in CMC Vellore?

A
Admin Posted On : May 3rd, 2024

At present, the fellowship stipend at CMC Vellore is INR 59,000After PF deduction, the in-hand amount received is INR 53,900. In addition to the monetary benefit, the fellows receive other benefits as well.

Accommodation

  • You will get a shared accommodation in CMC Annex, Sathuvachari if you are unmarried. A single accommodation is given to married fellows.
  • The room has 2 beds, 1 bucket, 1 mug, 1 fan, 1 mirror, an attached washroom and a geyser.
  • The Problem: Accommodation is not free of cost. The accommodations are not within the campus.

Study Material and Software: The fellows get access to study material and software, but on a paid basis. For this, they are charged INR 900 monthly, and this amount is deducted from their stipend.

Parking: For a monthly pass of INR 300, the fellows can access the common parking facility opposite the jubilee gate.

These are the perks (and disadvantages) of joining CMC Vellore for fellowship. I would recommend you compare the conditions with other premium medical institutions before choosing CMC Vellore for your fellowship.

Why do Christian institutes like CMC Vellore, St. Johns, etc. have so much Christian quota?

A
Admin Posted On : May 3rd, 2024

CMC Vellore is a Christian minority institution. This is why the majority of its MBBS and PG seats are reserved for Christian candidates.

I am a non-Christian, and I completed my MBBS from CMC Vellore in 2021. Though CMC Vellore has a Christian-based reservation system for admissions into MBBS, certain seats are open to meritorious candidates of all faiths.

This is the MBBS seat distribution system at CMC Vellore:

  • Management Quota- 50% seats are reserved for management quota candidates. These seats are divided into three categories-
    • Open Category Seats
    • Christian Minority Seats
    • CMC Vellore Staff Quota Seats
  • Government Quota- 50% seats fall under the government quota. Out of these-
    • 30% seats are allocated by the State Government on the basis of the State Merit list of NEET examination.
    • 20% seats are allocated by the State Government to Christian Minority candidates from Tamil Nadu.

You can refer to the following seat distribution data from the 2024 Admission Bulletin of CMC Vellore-

CMC MBBS Seats

Out of 100 MBBS seats at CMC Vellore, 68 are reserved for Christian students. However, the remaining seats are open to students of other faiths as well.
