Yes, someone from an average engineering college can do MS in America. To be clear, the name of the engineering college doesn’t play a role in the admission to colleges in America for MS.

One of my friends is an alumnus of the Global Academy of Technology. She is preparing to join the University of South Florida. Some of the factors which are crucial according to her experience are as follows.

Recruiters and interviewers from colleges in America generally look into the profile of the candidate for selection. The points listed below states the criteria that increase the chance of a student getting an MS seat in America.

  • The academic history, CGPA scores, etc. are taken into consideration for the selection. Though it is seen that students having low CGPAs get admission into good universities in the US, but they generally have other achievements such as projects, research papers, internships, etc.
  • The GRE, IELTS/TOEFL score plays an important role in the selection. An average score in GRE is enough to get a good college in the US if the candidate is having a good profile and experience in projects and internships.
  • Mini-projects, self-made projects are essential for the CV, even if they are non-academic.
  • Good internships from reputed organizations have a great impact on the interviewer. He/she may not know the name of the college, but knowing the organization the candidate has worked on is a good aspect.
  • Publishing research papers in international journals gives a great advantage. Generally, foreign institutes that are research-oriented gives preference to students having their own papers published.
  • The Statement of Purpose plays an important role in admission. Having a letter of recommendation from someone has a great impact.
  • Having relevant skills that are preferred in admission, from the curriculum of online courses helps in the interview process.

So, thorough research should be done by the candidate about the universities he/she wants admission in the US, and have the appropriate profile for the same.
