What is it like to study at IIM Ahmedabad?
It’s a great experience studying at IIM Ahmedabad. You won’t have a single moment during the 2-year span. One of my friends graduated last year from IIM Ahmedabad. Here is her experience in brief.
- First year at IIM A is a humbling experience. The student crowd is brilliant. You will get to learn a lot through peer interaction.
- The academic system at IIM A tries to build a gap between undergraduate studies and management studies. You will have a learn new subjects, irrespective of your background.
- Other than regular academics, there are other co-curricular activities and surprise quizzes. You will always have to be prepared. Doing the coursework in time will give you a competitive advantage.
- A major part of the 1st year goes into internship prep. Your internship will have major implications on your final placements as well. So, you need to spend a lot of time improving your CV and preparing for the interview.
- Dorm life is an integrating part of IIM A life. Your dorm mates will be a crucial part of your support system for the next 2 years.
- There are various club activities, you can choose one depending on your interest.
- Second-year is a lot different from the first year. While the first year is more about getting used to academics and campus life, the second year is more about making choices. You will have to decide whether you want an exchange program or not. You also need to choose which placement roles you want.
- You will get to choose your subjects for the second year based on your interests. There are also no surprise quizzes in second year.
- You will have to spend a lot of time in placement prep in your second year. The final placement process is much more extensive.
In second year, you will get a lot of free time as well. My friend explored many eateries and also went on trips with her friends. Naturally, everyone has a unique experience on campus.

IIM Ahmedabad can be perceived as an intimidating institution, according to many aspiring candidates. But how much truth is there in the above line can only be answered by an ex-IIM A student.
Sharing her experience of studying at IIM A, my sister has made some very accurate observations, which I intend to share with you all. First of all, Yes, it is considered one of the most popular educational institutions producing resilient students. Being a fresher at IIM A is definitely not an easy task. They have determined seniors, knowledgeable faculty members to guide and shape the freshers for their future.
Students in their First term got 6 cases of 200 pages each and 8 books of 500 pages each. They would have 3 classes of 75 minutes each. In each class students had to understand 20-30 pages of the case, which increased to 300 pages a day. This extra pressure day and day seen by the students, is what made IIM infamous.
There were also other scholarly exercises that kept the students engaged. These include -
- WAC - This course changes the perspective of composition, The WAC (Written Analysis Communication) is a different subject. Students were given 20 hours to complete the task which included 13 understudies.
- Surprise Quiz - An unexpected test is arranged for the students, which is generally informed by putting a notice in the board. This test happens so frequently that you can even address it as an event.
- T-NITE - This comes as a relief, as it is a social event comprising 4 days.
- Punctuality - Everyone at IIM A is expected to be punctual and right on time for everything. For an 8:45 class, students are expected to settle in at 8:44, appearing a minute later is considered behind schedule.
Other than the main terms, the students had to prepare themselves for the placement programs. From resume making to deciding what firm to enroll in, becomes a higher priority for the students. Their focussed attention is expected. Thus you can say that indeed IIM A is much stricter than other educational institutions, when it comes to the preparation of the students.
