How does IIM Shillong compare to the older IIMs?
It is difficult to make a direct comparison between IIM Shillong and the older IIMs, as they have different histories and areas of focus. IIM Shillong is a relatively newer IIM, having been established in 2007, while the older IIMs have been in existence for much longer.
In terms of comparison, IIM Shillong can be considered on par with IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode, as IIM Ahmedabad is far ahead in terms of reputation. While the companies that visit Shillong also visit Indore and Kozhikode, these campuses have their own set of marquee recruiters that Shillong has not yet been able to attract, such as TAS, HUL, BCG, and others.
According to NIRF rankings, IIM Shillong is ranked 26th. However, rankings should not be the only factor considered when evaluating a business school. There are many other factors that contribute to the quality of a college, and it is important to consider other factors such as curriculum, faculty, industry connections, and alumni network.
IIM Shillong has a strong focus on research and has partnerships with several international universities and organizations. It also has a diverse student body and a strong alumni network. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide which business school is the best fit for their goals and needs. IIM Shillong may be behind IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode in some areas but is likely to grow and narrow the gap in the coming years.

IIM Shillong, without any doubt, is considered among the top business schools in India. It is the seventh IIM founded in India (2007). After ten years of completion, it is now considered to be an old IIM of the prestigious BLACKIS family. But however, still there is a significant gap between the IIM Shillong and the other older IIMs.
These institutes have been operating for over three decades and have had a long history of excellence. They all have gone through their time of development and are now called sans pareil.
The gestation period is the time when an institution develops its reputation for producing outstanding business graduates/leaders in the industry. In addition, this is the time when the alumni base is growing and continues to make a mark. Presently, IIM Shillong is in the same process.
You can see a big improvement in the selection of recruiters if you go through the placement reports/brochures of the past few years. Shillong has hosted marquee recruiters such as Mahindra GMC, Aditya Birla Group, HSBC, Deloitte USI, J.P. Morgan Chase, Nomura, Barclays, ITC, Google, and so on, within a short span of 11 years since its establishment.
IIMs, regardless of the letter that follows, have strict admission standards and the talent pool they draw is second to none. The case of IIM Shillong is like that. In order to obtain admission, most students score between 97 and 99 percent. The institute has also won prestigious corporate competitions. To name a few: the CFA Institute Research Challenge, LÓreal Brand storm, Yes Bank Global Transformation Series, HSBC IB League, TATA Steel-a-thon.
IIM Shillong has developed at an impressive rate, regardless of the much-talked “location disadvantage.” The recruiters visit the campus frequently because they like what they get!
But yes, it will take a while because IIM Shillong among the older IIMs is quite new in terms of positioning and prestige, but the way it is growing it will reach there very soon.
