What are the best courses to take in IIM Ahmedabad?

The best course that I took during my MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, was not at my college.

It was the double degree that I pursued from ESCP Paris. There I had the pleasure of learning Marketing of Innovation under Professor Boris Durischin. The marketing concepts I learnt from him helped me land a well paying job. Sir made learning very pleasurable. He is one of the best teachers that I studied under.

The courses that I learnt at IIMA, and found useful, are-

Trading Strategies and Managing Financial Institutions- These two courses refreshed my concepts in Finance. MFI prepared me for BFSI and mid office IB roles. These courses are scoring as well.

Business & Intellectual Property and Legal Aspects of Business- These two courses under Prof. Anurag Agarwal, are a one time experience. Sir’s way of teaching is unmatched. He only teaches important and relevant topics. These two courses groomed me as a business professional.

These are the courses that I found useful as an MBA student at IIM Ahmedabad.

IIM Ahmedabad courses for MBA for the first year of the program are designed by the institute and these are compulsory. In the second year, you can choose electives according to your interest. Some of the popular electives among students are as follows (in no particular order).

You can only choose the courses from the second year onwards. It has been recommended by most of the students that you should take non-technical courses. The technical courses can only be taken in free time. These courses will be very helpful for you and will help you learn a lot of things with interactive classroom sessions. The following courses are recommended:

Leadership- meaning, vision and reality: This course helps in developing interactions in the group. It consists of 15 books and the whole class is divided into groups and each group is given one book. The groups have to present the gist of the story, followed by other presentations which help in learning.
Managing negotiations: The course is conducted in-class activities which involve the students to do certain kinds of negotiations and this develops their negotiation skills.
Managerial communication: In this course, certain practical sessions are conducted to develop your communication skills. This also helps in developing your leadership skills as well.
Game theory and application: This is a completely new type of course in which along with the theoretical knowledge you will also get to know practical applications.
Fund management project course: This course will help in getting exposure to the venture fund business and how you will get funds if you have decided to start your own business.
Media marketing: This course will help you in understanding what the new and innovative ways of marketing are.
Future, options and risk management: This course will help you in gaining knowledge of financial management.
Understanding, creativity, knowledge, and entrepreneurship: This course will help you in getting a guiding principle about starting a new business.

These are some of the recommended courses during this time. These courses teach you things far better than what you read in books. A good instructor, an interactive classroom setting, and a cordial environment help in effective learning.
