Past Academics are not just mere parameters for admission but they evaluate your consistency in performing well across various academic stages. This signifies your flexibility to adapt and maintain a consistent result. Thus a well-maintained and stable academic record ensures your competency and is given more importance than inconsistency in your academic profile.

Most B-School consider past academic records to ensure the student’s ability to give consistently good results. XLRI too is one such institute, the only difference being that initial shortlisting is not done on that basis. This enables candidates with a valid reason for average past academics to justify their profile. In fact, their justification can even convince the panelists to consider them over other candidates with better past academic records.

The reason I am so confident about this is that my sister told me her batchmates comprised both; students with excellent past academic records and students with below-average academic records. These students managed to seek admission by performing excellently in the post-written process.

So, XLRI does consider past academics but not for initial shortlisting and the overall weightage given to academics is comparatively less than other B schools.

It’s not true that XLRI doesn’t consider past academics for shortlisting students. They consider the academic records along with the other factors in your profile but the weightage assigned to academics is not as much as other reputed management institutes like IIMs.

Here is the weightage of different components for final selection at XLRI.

XLRI Selection Criteria Weightage 2022:

  • XAT score - 60%
  • GD/PI - 25%
  • Academic profile, essay, GK, work experience, video - 15%

As they assign only 15% for academic profile and other factors, if you perform well in XAT and GD-PI round, you will have a good chance of converting the interview call. Also, XAT doesn’t have any minimum required mark in graduation like CAT.

So, if you want to join XLRI, prepare well for XAT and work on your communication skills.

Yes, it's true that XLRI doesn't consider your past academic records for screening purposes during admissions. But if you have a poor past academic performance and get shortlisted, then be prepared to answer questions about it in your interview round.

If you are able to justify it there and present yourself well, and more importantly, if your XAT score is promising enough, there is no reason for you to worry. For the final selections, there will be a composite score which will comprise your interview and GD marks along with a few other criteria.

A friend of mine with poor academic records made it to XLRI but he faced discrimination among students with better past academic records. They have an advantage over others which they rightly deserve.

XLRI values your confidence, passion, decision-making skills, innovative ideas, and many more. Academic performance might get influenced by many factors like the financial status of family, resources, hard work, availability of opportunities, location, and many other factors; where most of them are not directly related to a student's abilities or talents.

This outlook of XLRI towards education is one of the major reasons for their success. You will be definitely benefited if you are one of those candidates shortlisted at XLRI.
