My 12th percentage is 82, 10th is 72 and I graduated with around a 6.9 CGPA. What are the chances that if I prepare for the CAT that I would get IIMs, FMS, XLRI, etc.?

It's almost impossible to predict the safe percentage at which you will get a call from any IIMs or any other top B-Schools. We can outline a generic method where a certain weightage could be given for each score to conclude if your records are good enough for these institutes.

During the selection process at any IIM, the following factors are considered.

• By considering the above weightage, if you maintain above 90% in your class 10th, 12th and graduation you will get a complete 5 points, or else the score will be reduced as per your percentage.
• Coming to work experience, which always follows the bell curve for most of the IIMs with a maximum of around 24-30 months of experience. If you lack work experience and have not pursued post-graduation yet, you won't get any points there. By adding up gender diversity and extracurricular activities, your total score will turn out to be 19 of 50.
• Ultimately we have to look into the CAT score. Let us assume that out of 340, the topper scored 240 which will be 100 percentile. So 99.75% will account for 200 and 99% will be around 170. So if you score around 170, your composite score will be around 54.4 points (170/240*50)

Most of the IIMs have certain points for selection criteria preferably around 50-75 points. So if you fall under that range, kudos to you.

You have to get 99.9 to 99.25% in CAT to get into any IIM. Your CAT score must be above 98% in order to get into any B-Schools like FMS, XLRI as per previous year trends which will add up to your 50 points and can easily fetch you a seat.
