A quarter of the world’s population—which includes millions of people from the developing countries across Asia, Middle East and Africa—live in eternal darkness after every sunset. The absence of light limits the possibilities of earning a livelihood for every active member of poverty-ridden families. PepsiCo is helping provide light to such impoverished households by its ‘Liter of Light’ project. As the PepsiCo’s official website highlights, “PepsiCo’s support for the Liter of Light program is helping provide inexpensive and environmentally friendly bottle lights to light needy households.”
The fundamentals of the project is the construction of alternate 55 watts lightbulbs with the use of plastic soft drink bottles, water, bleach and pieces of ridged metal. The revolutionary facet of the ‘bottle light’ is that it requires no electricity.
The ‘Liter of Light’ program was originally conceived in 2011 by PepsiCo Philippines in partnership with MyShelter Foundation to install inexpensive, simplistic and eco-friendly ‘bottle lights’. These lights would enlighten the living conditions of poor communities in rural Philippines. With the success of the Philippines’ venture, PepsiCo decided to pick up the project and extend it across other countries in Africa and Asia with remarkable consequences. There have sprung up ‘Liter of Light’ initiatives in countries like India, Pakistan, Columbia, Mexico, Egypt and Ethiopia.
PepsiCo has also ventured to create awareness among the masses about this program by organizing training centres for volunteers, while simultaneously creating portals for individual fund donations. With each Liter of Pepsi that you buy, you are actively donating to this special cause. So buy that Pepsi Liter and help Light thousands of villages across the world.
