The Mathematics and Education degree will introduce you to a the essential core disciplines of Mathematics and help you engage with the latest thinking on education.

The Mathematics and Education Degree is a Major/Minor scheme meaning that you will spend two-thirds of your time studying Mathematics (your Major subject) in the Department of Mathematics and one-third studying Education (your Minor subject) in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning.

Our Mathematics courses are accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the UKÕs learned and professional society for mathematics and its applications. The IMA exists to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, for the public good. Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since the foundation of the university in 1872, making it the oldest Mathematics department in Wales. Despite our heritage we have continued to innovate ensuring that the degree schemes we offer will provide you with the best Mathematics degree you can possibly obtain.

The School of Education and Lifelong Learning, which recently relocated to new premises on the main campus at the University, offers the latest learning and teaching environments, the expertise of experienced staff members, and partnerships with communities, schools and authorities across Wales and the UK. The School is a long-established department, which has been offering stimulating and innovative study programmes for over a hundred years. Aberystwyth was the first university in England and Wales to offer an honours degree in Education, and continues to provide excellent opportunities for the study of Education as an academic discipline in combination with a wide range of complementary partner subjects.

You will be allocated a personal tutor in each department, offering subject-specific support as well as help with what may be different departmental routines and methods. Personal tutors can also provide information if you need to access any of the University's support services.

The university has a proud tradition of research excellence, as demonstrated in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It placed the university in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.
