- This is an on-campus and thesis-based program.
- The MPhil in Criminology provides a foundational education in prominent criminological theories, research methods, and areas of criminological knowledge.
- This program has two teaching terms in which students attend two core courses and three optional courses, and one research term devoted to the preparation of a dissertation.
- Each student will be assigned a supervisor by the beginning of the second week of term.
- The core seminars take place twice a week in the Michaelmas Term (a total of 3 hours per week for each seminar course), optional seminar courses typically involve eight 1.5 hour seminars which meet once or twice per week.
- The compulsory criminological theories discussion groups and practical research methods workshops also take place throughout the term.
- In addition to the main research methods seminars, MPhil in Criminology students attend a series of workshops that provide an opportunity to put each key research method into practice.
- All students are required to give a short presentation on their dissertation research in the Lent term.
- Students complete one dissertation of between 15,000 and 18,000 words.
- Any students who has failed a unit of assessment, who has one or more units assessed as borderline, or whose work for any other reason, in the opinion of the senior examiner, requires additional assessment, will normally be called for an oral examination.
- The Institute strongly recommends that students who aim to progress to a PhD apply for the MPhil in Criminological Research in the first instance.
