At The University of Hull studying the BSc Geology (Hons) you will focus on practical work in the laboratory and in the field Ð with specialist modules in geological maps, structures and materials as well as an emphasis on solving real-world problems. This three-year programme, accredited by the Geological Society of London,Êequips you with the specialist training you need to work in geology roles within the mining, petroleum, civil engineering, and environmental consultancy sectors and beyond.
There are three options available for studying Geology at Hull. The foundation year is available for students who want to study Geology at degree level but don't have the Êacademic qualifications for direct entry on to the programme. The degree offers a three-year study option and a four-year course with a year studying at a university abroad.
We focus strongly onÊfield trips, both in the UK and to destinations such as Spain and Cyprus Ð with all core trips included in the cost of your tuition.ÊÊYou will receive training in the skills required by a range of employers, including map creation and interpretation as well as resource identification. This programme focuses on the relevance of geoscience to the needs of society, including the search for natural resources, and the increasing importance of environmental geoscience to society and industry.
Future Prospects
100% of full-time studentsÊon this programme find employment or progress to further study within six months of finishing their course (Higher Education Statistics Agency 2017). A degree in Geology equips you with the direct experience and skills to work in the specialist fields of exploration geology, the petroleum industry and environmental agencies and consultancies. You also develop a range of transferable skills in research, data analysis and communication, which are valued by employers in a wide range of areas including management, finance, computing, public administration, transport, the media and marketing.
Recent graduates from related programmes have gone on to a range of roles, including: exploration geologist; petroleum industry consultant; hydrographer for the Humber Port Authority; environmental consultant; scientist with the Environment Agency; and secondary school teaching.
Further qualifications are required for some careers, and many graduates will continue their studies with MA, MSc and PhD degrees, the PGCE teaching certificate or a number of other professional qualifications.
