The market for postgraduate training in quantitative finance is evolving, with a change in the skillset that employers demand. The Mathematical Finance programme at Birkbeck, University of London offers advanced training in quantitative skills used in modern financial institutions, including most notably valuation of securities, and measurement and management of portfolio risks, enabling you to seek employment in financial institutions, including regulator bodies.

Students will be trained in programming, numerical methods and statistics, and given a grounding in pricing and risk management techniques. A key feature is the emphasis on computational methods and implementation of the pricing and risk management techniques learnt. Students will complete modules in programming, numerical methods and financial statistics, and many topics are illustrated by computer examples.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to get admission to this program.
  • Students require a minimum GPA of 3 on a 4.0 scale for the program.
  •  Students should have a second-class honours degree (2:2) or above from a UK university, or overseas equivalent, in a quantitative subject such as mathematics, physics, statistics, economics or engineering.
  • Students need merit or higher in a Graduate Diploma in economics, mathematics or statistics would be suitable.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Students need to submit minimum GRE exam scores for a better chance of admission.
  • Students are reviewed on their individual merits and professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. 
  • Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

If students are living in the UK on a Student visa, they will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
