SUNY Buffalo State has been offering graduate degree programs since 1945. Twenty-two areas of specialization in the master's of science in education are offered—more choices in graduate education study than any other SUNY school. While teacher education remains a tradition, specialized graduate degree programs in art conservation, creative studies (courses on campus and online), adult education (program online), applied economics, and higher education student affairs administration are unique to SUNY.
The Art Education Graduate Program prepares students for professional certification to teach visual arts in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 (PK-12) in New York State schools. This program develops art education professionals who:
- understand contemporary art and culture and are committed to teaching students in meaningful and critical ways.
- consider teaching to be a dynamic and continuing process utilizing current media technology.
- are sensitive to issues of diversity and capable of adapting their teaching strategies to meet individual needs.
- are encouraged to be active in their professional, cultural, and art communities.
- are competent in theory, research, and methodology in art and art education.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Applicants must have completed bachelors degree in visual related fields from an accredited university
- Submit official transcripts of all previous education completed
- Official transcripts must complete a course by course evaluation from an accredited agency
- Applicants should have minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent on a scale of 4.0
- Submit a writing sample in 500-1000 words of your writing sample
- An interview with art and design chair
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum score of 79 in iBT; 550 in PBT
- IELTS; minimum score of 6.0
- Duolingo: minimum score of 100
