As one of two areas of emphasis offered in the Communication Arts Department, Graphic Design challenges students to research, develop, and refine projects that combine meaning with image-making and typographic form. Our other area of emphasis is Illustration. Communication Arts also offers an Advertising Design Minor.
Typical formats include branding and logo development, posters, books, package design, apps, websites, and interactive design. Students learn to articulate a critical and theoretical perspective and develop graphic design skills, such as type design and traditional letterpress. Strong craft and presentation skills are emphasized throughout. Students achieve the highest level of design excellence through critiques, reviews, and workshops. Recent employers include Apple, Anthropologie, LACMA, Guess, Metro, and Capitol Records.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other education completed
- Submit a personal statement in at least 500 words describing your background and interest in studying art and design
- Submit a portfolio
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 79 in ibt;
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
- Duolingo: minimum 105
- PTE: minimum 58
