As one of two areas of emphasis offered by the Communication Arts Department, Illustrators develop a strong personal style in their images and use their image-making skills to support the communication needs of a variety of clients in multiple contexts.
The other area of emphasis in Communication Arts is Graphic Design. There is also an Advertising Design minor.
Contemporary illustration ranges in application from client-led publications and merchandise to self-directed projects and exhibitions. A faculty of working professionals guides majors through a curriculum that emphasizes strong concepts, technical proficiency, and the development of a unique style and voice. Visiting artists, conventions, field trips, and student exhibitions support a rich community for emerging illustrators. Recent clients include Nike, Hurley International, Chronicle Books, and LA Weekly.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other education completed
- Submit a personal statement in at least 500 words describing your background and interest in studying art and design
- Submit a portfolio
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 79 in ibt;
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
- Duolingo: minimum 105
- PTE: minimum 58
