Juan Arias Review at University Of California [UCSB], Santa Barbara | Collegedunia

University of California's: Great experience

JA
6.3 /10

It was a good fit considering my major, career path, and overall personality. The economics program is one of the best out of the UCs, plus it was the best Econ program I got into. Since I want to work on Wall Street, I thought networking at UC was a vital part of my education. My personality is not only academic but outgoing so when I visited and saw that the atmosphere fit my personality perfectly, I knew it was going to be a good fit.

Course Curriculum :

I think the quarter system here is very challenging and fast paced, but there's lots of resources that you can use to excel academically. Plus most of the programs here are ranked very highly, in comparison to other schools, making sure students retain the knowledge when they graduate.

Exams :

The SAT and AP exams were the only exams I took concerning the university as I needed the SAT to get in and my so exams to obtain additional college credit. Plus with my ap language exam, I tested out of the university writing exam.

Placement :

So far they've been pretty good, but not as good as other UCs that are located in or near large cities, like UCLA. Yet, they are plenty of opportunities pertaining to the surrounding cities like Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Oxnard.

Internship :

As a first year, I'm unsure if the university will provide you with one, but internships are obtainable through programs, organizations, and local businesses around the campus. Usually to see what?s available you go to career services or our online service, handshake.

Events :

We have several large events including concerts like Delirium or large spring events like Deltopia. Other than that we have special events hosted by our AS program broad or other organizations. Some of these include guest speakers or hiring events.

Fees :

The fees are pretty straight forward including tuition, room and board, CA resident fee and other university ones.

Scholarship :

I only received a small scholarship from the school for my academic performance in high school. Whereas I don't receive federal financial aid.

Examination Structure :

The exam structure is very rigorous as some classes will be curved and have multiple midterms and exams through the 10 week quarter. This leads to students being very stressed and more likely not to do well.

Faculty :

I've noticed a lot of the faculty here on campus are very intelligent as they have more than several years of education behind them.

Hostel :

I'm currently in the school residence halls, which are really convenient, but ridiculously overpriced. Whereas the off-campus living is a lot cheaper, but more of a hassle, since it does require most of the time full year leases.
