For a history major, curiosity is the biggest prerequisite. You’ll become an investigator into the minds, motivations, and movements that shaped our world, all while studying in one of the most historic cities on earth. Professors encourage classroom debate and rigorous research—you’ll sharpen your analytical and critical-thinking skills to interpret the past, contextualize the present, and frame the future. You'll customize your studies by selecting a concentration in either United States , Regional and Global Histories, or Public History.

By graduation this History major at Suffolk University, you’ll be ready for a career that requires you to ask challenging questions and provide well-articulated answers, from law to education to journalism to business.

In addition to classroom work, you’ll have the rare opportunity to earn college credit while interning at one of the region’s many historical societies and museums, like the USS Constitution and the Massachusetts Historical Society. You’ll also have unparalleled access to rare archival resources, such as collections at the Boston Public Library. Our history program also offers several key areas of specialization, including African history, Asian history, American history, and women’s history, with upper-level classes tailored to your focus. Suffolk is home to a branch of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.

The departments of History and English also offer an interdisciplinary honors major for interested and qualified students to explore the relationship between history and literature.

Careers

History students develop skills in logical reasoning, research, compiling evidence, and written and oral expression. Broadly educated graduates with these skills are well-positioned for careers in law, business, teaching, public service, and media.

Some of our recent graduates are working at the Massachusetts State House, Freedom Trail Foundation, Boston Children’s Museum, and Boston City Hall. Others have earned advanced degrees in business, law, history, and other fields.
