University of Massachusetts Boston Scholarships

UMass Boston does not offer scholarships to international freshmen but there are a limited number of scholarships that may be available for continuing international students. It is pertinent to note that international students do not qualify for federal or state grants. • The Halal Alamgir Memorial Scholarships: This scholarship is for continuing students pursuing a career in areas of democracy, development and social justice. The student must be a junior-level student in any political science, international relations or any other major. The amount is 2,606 USD. The deadline is February 20. • The Rusty Simonds Award: This is open to full-time undergraduates in political science who have earned a minimum of 60 credits in the school and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. The amount is 3,549 USD and the deadline is February 20.

Work While Study

International students do not qualify for work-study on-campus or off-campus because of the Federal Work-Study regulations. However, international students can work through the school's Institutional Student Employment (Non-Work Study) program. International students are not allowed to work for more than 20 hours a week while classes are in session or 40 hours when classes are not in session. Students are to sign up for job listings through the 'handshake' website at www.umb.joinhandshake.com using their University of Massachusetts Boston email username. Students are to apply for a Social Security Number after they've been given employment at the Student Employment Services office on the 4th Floor of the Campus Center. International graduate students, however, who have enrolled for at least nine credits per semester may apply for an assistantship with their Graduate School department where they may be granted benefits such as a stipend, Fee Waiver of tuition credit in form of incentive or payment. However, the number of graduate assistantships are limited based on the budget.
