VISA & Work Study
VISA
- All nonimmigrants require a valid visa stamp in their passports before coming to the U.S. under any nonimmigrant status, including F & J. An exception to this rule exists for citizens of Canada (and Bermuda under limited circumstances), who are visa-exempt. All students must make sure that their passports are correctly stamped upon entry with their intended status.
- F-1 and J-1 applicants must demonstrate to the U.S. consulate that they do not plan to reside in the U.S. permanently. These applicants should be prepared to provide the consulate with ample documentation that they plan to return to their home country.
Work Study
- Federal Work-Study (FWS) is one form of financial aid offered to eligible University of Virginia students that is based on financial need and is earned through a student’s employment. It is a federal program administered by UVA’s Student Financial Services, which determines FWS eligibility and makes awards based on the student’s financial need. Eligibility is also based on being a full-time student, enrolled in a degree program, enrolled in at least 12 hours in a term.
- Student Financial Services automatically considers work-study awards for eligible undergraduate students once their completed FAFSA, CSS Profile, and other requested documents are received. Graduate students must indicate their interest in FWS on their FAFSA. Annual award amounts range from $1,000 to $4,000 for undergraduate students and up to $5,000 for graduate students. Many job opportunities are available to eligible students.
Career and Placement after Course
- Many students visit the UVA Career Center to inquire about on-Grounds and local employment opportunities. Opportunities exist on-Grounds as well as in the surrounding community. Handshake is UVA's comprehensive employment management system and is a centralized resource for student employment.
- Student employment offers students exposure to different organizations, work cultures, and functional roles. Students who work summer or part-time jobs during the academic year develop strong transferable skills to internships and professional positions. These employment opportunities can also help them establish a network of referrals and key contacts in their intended industries of interest.
