These future health professionals will be able to identify and promote policies and practices that ensure scientific research, health care delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in a socially and ethically responsible manner. They will also appreciate how bioscience and health care take place within cultural and social contexts and how culture interacts with an individual’s experience of illness and the way medicine is practiced.
Students must complete two of the following three certificates: Bioethics, Medical Humanities, Minority Health. In addition students musts complete a minor in Anthropology, English, History, Philosophy, or Sociology OR complete the premedical certificate. Credit hours may vary according to the choices students make. For each certificate or minor included in this degree program, at least 9 credit hours must apply only to that certificate/minor and not to either of the other two. Each certificate/minor must include at least one course at the 3000 level or above.
Career Possibilities:
This major is appropriate for any student interested in pursuing a career related to health care, including medicine, public health policy, or patient advocacy, and provides an interdisicplinary foundation for graduate study in law, chaplaincy, hospital administration, philanthropy, or other fields where moral, cultural, social, and policy issues delated to health and disease may arise.
