- Metals, ceramics, glasses and polymers are all used for a variety of functions in cell phones, semiconductors, automobiles, airplanes, tennis rackets, bicycles, space shuttle tiles or surgical implants. Thus, newly engineered materials play a vast role in technology, health and the well-being of society. Materials science and engineering majors study how the structure of materials at even the minutest level (nano, micro, atomic) dramatically affects the properties and behavior of materials. Materials scientists and engineers contribute to improved design, quality, and performance of small and big engineering components and systems. UC Davis’s MSE program provides the fundamental basis you'll need to work in research, processing, and materials design.
- Graduates with a degree in materials science and engineering benefit from the practical nature of the program when seeking employment. Graduates from the MSE major work in technical positions in industries ranging from electronic/photonics, automotive/aeronautical to bio and nanotechnology applications.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent)
- Students who are not residents of California must earn a GPA of 3.40 or higher.
- SAT/ACT scores
- The University of California Board of Regents unanimously approved the suspension of the standardized test requirement (ACT/SAT) for all California freshman applicants until fall 2024.
- If students’ native language and school language of instruction prior to their study in the United States were not English, then they must demonstrate English proficiency. They can do so by submitting TOELF/IELTS score reports.
Indian Eligibility:
- Students must complete their standard XII years of education and sit for 10th and 12th-year board/state examinations.
