Master of Arts [M.A] (History)
Field of Study:
$23,412/Yr
Our greatest strength is in U.S. history, but we also offer courses of study in Latin American and Caribbean history, medieval Europe, modern Europe, Asia, and public history. Some of the other features that set us apart from other programs include an accomplished group of graduate faculty, the opportunity to apply for admission to either the fall or spring semester, course schedules that accommodate evening and part-time study, support for student participation in local and regional history conferences, and comparatively low tuition. As part of the course of study we have both a non-thesis option, and a thesis option designed to suit the needs of students planning to apply to a Ph.D. program after graduating from FGCU.
Graduates of the program will be able to
- Express a scholarship-based understanding of key historiographical theories and philosophies, and their application to a variety of historical subject matters.
- Evaluate and deconstruct a range of historical texts.
- Conduct advanced historical research and scholarship, using relevant resources and databases that will foster continuing enquiry.
- Engage in historical research and apply that research in writing.
- Think systemically about society, politics, and culture.
- Analyze and evaluate historical texts, including primary and secondary sources, in a complex manner.
- Demonstrate knowledge of historical theories and philosophies through their own writing and research.
- Perform advanced historical research that engages with interdisciplinary perspectives, adds to scholarly understanding, or provides challenging perspectives.
