The major concentrates on the ancient civilization of the Mediterranean world, draws on courses offered by various University departments, and allows students to create individual programs. It offers two optional tracks. The ancient Mediterranean religions track is for students with an interest in religions of the Mediterranean basin from the 10th century B.C. through the 8th century A.D. The Egypt and the ancient Near East track is for students with a particular interest in civilizations of the east Mediterranean from the earliest times through antiquity. See the "Ancient Mediterranean Religions Track" and the "Egypt and the Ancient Near East Track" below. The major, including ancient Mediterranean religions track and Egypt and the ancient Near East track, is sponsored by the School of Art and Art History and the Departments of Classics, History, and Religious Studies.Although the major is not preparation for graduate study in classics, it provides a sound basis for preparing individuals to teach at the secondary school and community college levels. It also provides a liberal arts and sciences foundation appropriate for further study in law, medicine, and other professions.
