Study in the field of English offers a general humanistic education as well as training in communication and analytical skills that are essential in most careers. An education in English enables you to read closely and critically, to think analytically, to write and communicate, to weigh values, and to understand different peoples and cultures. A B.A. in English can lead to careers in public relations, publishing, radio, theater, and library science.
Undergraduate majors are eligible to join the English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta. Undergraduates are also eligible for a series of annual departmental awards, including Best Freshman Essay, the Virginia Wilson Cook Award for Excellence in English Education, the Owen Reamer Award for Excellence in English, the Felix J. Voorhies Award for Creative Writing, and the Webb Award for Excellence in Technical Writing.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other education completed
- Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent
- Submit SAT/ACT scores
- Applicants must have 18 ACT English or 500 SAT Evidence-based Reading & Writing or 3.00 Overall high school grade point average
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum score of 79 in iBT; 550 in PBT
- IELTS: minimum score of 6.5
- Duolingo: minimum score of 100
