The Department of Fine Arts and Communication offers undergraduate programs in Art, Music, Speech Communication and Theatre.? The multi-disciplinary nature of the department allows for individual as well as collaborative educational initiatives.? Each program provides students with theoretical foundations, practical experience and skills in both Liberal Education Program (LEP) and major-specific courses, preparing them for careers, leadership and citizenship in the fine arts and communication fields.??
Through their professional practice, faculty model artistic output, creative activity and scholarly pursuit which allow them to create an environment in which students experience first-hand practice of academic disciplines.? The department offers all members of the university and local communities with opportunities to engage in creative activities through performance and exhibition.? These same activities provide cultural enrichment for local, regional and national audiences.?
This degree when coupled with professional education requirements can be used to obtain 5-12 education licensure in Communication Arts and Literature from the Minnesota State Board of Teaching.
Student Outcomes:
- ?Demonstrate an understanding of communication theories and concepts related to rhetoric, small group communication, interpersonal communication, cross-cultural communication, mass communication, storytelling, organizational communication visual communication and/or communication ethics.?
- Demonstrate knowledge of the history of the communication discipline.? Demonstrate an understanding of pedagogical theories and concepts related to the teaching of communication at the secondary level.?
- ?Demonstrate skills necessary for teaching communication at the secondary level (such as writing lesson plans, teaching lessons, using media and technology, writing evaluation rubrics, evaluating student performances, and leading class discussions).?
- Demonstrate skills necessary for directing speech activities at the secondary level (such as writing critiques, working in a tabulation room, coaching students and scheduling a tournament).

Academic Requirements:
- Applicants must provide proof of high school or secondary education to be considered for admission into the university
- Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent on a scale of 4.0 for admissions consideration
- Official transcripts must be evaluated by an evaluation agency like WES, ECE or SpanTran
- Personal letter should be submitted highlighting your goals and why you should be selected
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 61 in iBT; 500 in PBT; 173 in CBT
- IELTS: minimum score of 5.5
- Duolingo: minimum score of 95
- PTE: minimum score of 47
- SAT: minimum score of 540 in evidence based reading and writing
- ACT: minimum 21 in English
