Bachelor of Arts [B.A] [Journalism + Design] From The New School

Students can study Journalism + Design as a major (BA, Journalism + Design), a minor, or a self-designed major (BA or BS, Liberal Arts).

You’ll learn from cutting-edge, respected professionals and scholars from the fields of both journalism and design. This program has been developed based on the belief that a free press is an essential part of a functioning democracy, and it allows you to focus on your own area of interest, whether that be food, fashion, or the environment. You’ll be grounded in the fundamentals of serious journalism while being pushed to explore its boundaries.

The Journalism + Design program was created in consultation with some of the most prominent minds in news innovation as well as traditional journalism. Advisors and friends of the program come from the New York Times, The Guardian, ProPublica, The Center for Investigative Reporting, WNYC, and The Knight Foundation. This groundbreaking program is distinguished by its focus on journalistic practice supported by the design process. The flexibility of the program allows for student feedback to help shape its future direction.

While it offers the atmosphere and intimacy of a small college, Eugene Lang College is also part of The New School, a leading progressive university in New York City. The program's collaboration with Parsons creates opportunities to study interactive design, editorial design, data visualization, photojournalism, illustration, mobile design, and media business management.

Our location in the world’s media capital presents a wealth of opportunities, including real-world experience—our students have interned at professional news organizations such as the New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, Thomson/Reuters, Bloomberg News, WNYC, and ProPublica.

Career Paths

News organizations and media companies are eager to hire people grounded in fundamental reporting and ethics who can also creatively develop and design solutions for 21st-century journalism. Journalism + Design majors may go on to work as digital journalists or writers or pursue advanced studies in journalism, design, or media studies.
