Address urgent global issues, find just solutions for all communities.

  • When Naomi Klein wants to launch her new book addressing how economics is waging war against life on earth, she comes to .
  • When the People?s Climate March is looking for a partner to host organizers, events, rallies and pop-up classes in Union Square Park, they come to The New School.
  • When advocacy organizations, post Hurricane Sandy, look for innovative ways to track subsidies, they come to The New School.

The New School is at the forefront of addressing global environmental issues thanks to Milano?s program. This program is designed to turn passion for environmental change and sustainability into careers with impact. Our students benefit from small, customized classes, a rigorous program of theory and practice, and close attention from a faculty engaged in research, scholarship, and cutting-edge professions.

Our practice-based learning places students front and center at organizations working on the most urgent problems facing communities. Access to the Tishman Environment and Design Center, International Field Programs, NSSR economic courses, Parsons design courses and other Milano programs prepare them to engage with a diverse scientific, social, and political world. The program culminates in a capstone project in which students bring their knowledge and critical perspectives to a real-world challenge.

All Milano School graduate MS programs are flexible and convenient for working professionals as well as recent college graduates. You can study full-time and complete the program in two years or part-time and take up to five years to earn the master's degree.

Connecting to New York City

New York City is a hub for every kind of organization that can affect environmental change. Our students are handling environmental problems at government institutions, corporations, small, innovative companies, and nonprofits throughout the city. Current examples include rethinking environmental studies in charter schools, helping the NY Power Authority operations become more sustainable, and working with a local Microbrewery to develop environmentally responsible techniques.

Career Paths

Students will be prepared to work in a variety of fields, including government, nonprofits, advocacy, social change, and corporate social responsibility and sustainability. EPSM graduates hold such positions as Chief Sustainability Officer for the town of North Hempstead, NY; Project Manager for Multifamily Programs at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA); Green Business Support Specialist at the Center for Eco Technology; Project Manager at the Sustainable Development Solutions Center; and Project Coordinator for Public, Governmental, and Regulatory Affairs at the New York Power Authority. Others have started their own businesses or consulting firms, or work with networks of social change activists.
