The guiding purpose of this interdisciplinary curriculum is to awaken an interest in and love for exploring and criticizing the intellectual traditions that form the basis of understanding modern humanity.

Our sense of self, what we consider important, how we pursue knowledge and life, even our tastes and inclinations are all issues that have long been studied in the field of philosophy. But philosophy also seeks to address the need, even the responsibility, to challenge and rethink what is traditionally accepted to be true about who and what we are.

In the Philosophy program from The New School, you?ll learn to:

  • Understand, read, and interpret philosophical texts
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the main philosophical concepts
  • Apply these concepts to the analysis of contemporary problems
  • Critically evaluate philosophical arguments and locate them within contemporary debate
  • Clearly express and defend your own arguments

While it offers the atmosphere and intimacy of a small college, Eugene Lang College is part of The New School, a major progressive university in New York City. Advanced students may take approved courses in the Department of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research, whose faculty includes some of the leading contemporary philosophers in the Continental tradition.

Eugene Lang College is connected to everything New York City has to offer: its history, culture, and energy. Using New York City as your laboratory, you?ll gain knowledge, skills, and opportunities to address society?s challenges.

Career Pathways

Graduates of the Philosophy program have gone on to pursue careers in a wide variety of fields, both professional and academic, including law, politics, public service, writing, and the arts and sciences.
