Civic education has always been an important part of the program, but Letters majors now have the option of pursuing a special emphasis in Constitutional Studies through OU’s Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage.

The Letters program has its home in the Department of Classics and Letters, but students may take courses in many affiliated departments to satisfy the requirements of the major. Faculty advisors are always available to help students identify the best courses for their interests and goals. Because of the considerable freedom Letters majors have in meeting degree requirements, they often find that they can pursue minors or a second major to expand their horizons and explore opportunities.

Interests & Skills

Letters students typically have interests in history, language, literature, and philosophy. Related skills include problem solving and decision making, clear and persuasive communication, critical listening, analysis of cause and effect, organization, and logical reasoning. Common second majors and include Biology, Economics, International and Area Studies, Mathematics, and Political Science. Letters majors also pursue minors in Enterprise Studies, Non-Profit Organizational Studies, and a variety of languages.
