Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in public humanities or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • A GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 is required to be eligible for the program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

  • Students must complete an undergraduate degree with first-class in a relevant field from a highly ranked university in India.
  • Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program

Required Document List

The following required documents are:

  • Resume/CV: It is the outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Three Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (combination of professional and academic recommenders) which includes information about the student, their connection with the person they are recommending, their qualification, and the specific skills they have.
  • Statement of PurposeThis statement must describe your qualifications and the objectives of your intended educational program.
  • Personal Statement: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Official Transcripts: Applicants who have attended and/or received degrees from institutions outside the US must provide certified copies and certified English translations of transcripts or records of all previous post-secondary education and of all degrees conferred.
  • Writing Sample: Writing sample required (up to 20 pages in the area of interest and can include academic and popular writing).
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.

VISA & Work Study

The students can opt for any one of the two visas namely F1 Visa, J1 Visa.

F1 Visa:

  • International students must maintain full-time student status in order to maintain legal status with the United States government. 
  • It is obtained by presenting Form I-20 to a US consulate or embassy and submitting an application for an F-1 visa.
  • The I-20/DS-2019 is issued from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and has an identifying SEVIS number that starts with the letter "N" listed above the bar code on the form. This form is acknowledging plans to study at a specific school in the U.S. in this case, Brown.
  • Full-time attendance is at least 12 credit hours of classes each semester.
  • International students are not permitted to take more than one three-credit-hour online class per semester or each summer session while remaining in the states.
  • Students losing their F-1 visa status by dropping below the minimum 12 credit hours, those who become academically ineligible to continue at the University, and those with serious infractions of campus rules or legal infractions resulting in the conviction of a felony must return to their home countries immediately.

J1 Visa:

  • This is also known as J1 Exchange Visitor Visa.
  • This visa may be used by those who come to study or conduct research as participants in an Exchange Visitor program.
  • If students have a spouse or unmarried minor (under age 21) children who will accompany them during the program at Brown University, students will receive additional Forms I-20 (F) or DS-2019 (J). Family members that are eligible and receive these dependent forms will have to apply for the appropriate F-2 visa or J-2 visa.
