English majors must demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in a language other than English. Cal Poly offers intermediate-level instruction in several languages. We encourage majors to study abroad, and many students choose to complete their language requirement in another country.
Though the core of the major is literature, students may choose an emphasis in fiction- or poetry-writing. The emphasis consists of one introductory workshop, two advanced workshops, one upper-division course in modern or contemporary literature in the student's chosen genre, and the senior project in that genre.

- Explicate literary texts from the diverse range of works and traditions.
- Incorporate scholarly research into papers.
- Understand a wide range of historical and critical literary linguistic terms and categories.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other educational institution attended
- Applicant must have completed the following courses: 2 years of history/social sciences, 4 years of English, 3 years of Mathematics, 2 years of laboratory science, 2 years of a language other than English, 1 year of visual/performing art, 1 year of electives
- Average weighted GPA of class 9-11 will be considered for admissions
- Activities such as work experience, internships, volunteer experiences will be taken into consideration for admissions
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 80 in iBT
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
