With an acceptance rate of 83% in the Fall, the University of Alabama admissions are slightly selective. A total of 38,505 applicants applied for admissions this semester, out of which 31,959 students were offered admission. Currently, 38,100 (32,795 undergraduate) students are enrolled in the university. The university has a great reputation for having a very high research activity and is considered to be a great place for higher studies in the US.

Programs offered by the University of Alabama include over 70 undergraduate and 120 graduate programs. In addition to automatic merit scholarships, students can apply for competitive scholarships. All competitive scholarships are awarded by the scholarship application. Applicants must submit completed applications by January 15 for full consideration.

  • The University of Alabama invites admissions in the Fall, Summer, and Spring sessions. 
  • International applicants are not mandated to submit SAT/ACT scores but US applicants are required to submit these scores.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0 is required to be eligible for undergraduate admission.

University of Alabama International Admissions

Overseas applicants are required to provide additional information as specified by the University of Alabama. These include english proficiency requirements and proof of sufficient funds for sustaining education for at least one year of the program.

Visa Process

If offered admission into their programs, international students must arrange for their student visas to study in the US. Following things should be kept in mind:

  • Students who wish to study at the University of alabama require a visa document(I-20/ DS-2019) in order to obtain their visas.
  • Student must have an offer of admission from the university
  • Required proof of funding must be provided
  • A SEVIS fee of 350 USD needs to be paid for F-1 students and 220 USD for J-1 students

University of Alabama Undergraduate Admissions

The University of Alabama offers more than 70 undergraduate programs through 12 schools and colleges. 

How to apply: 

  • The students need to apply by completing an online application followed by the submission of the application fee. 
  • A CWID (identification number) is sent to the registered email id within 2-3 days of completing the online application. 
  • This CWID is used for creating a MyBama login. The documents are uploaded on MyBama International Document Upload link. 

Academic requirements: 

  • International students should have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above. 
  • English language proficiency scores should be provided. 
  • The ACT/SAT scores are not mandatory. The scores can be provided by the students applying for scholarships. 
  • The minimum score requirements for ACT/SAT differ with different scholarships. The details are given below:

University of Alabama Graduate Admissions

The University of Alabama offers over 120 masters programs. The admission test scores required for admission to the graduate school are mentioned below:

Supporting documents: Documents required by all the applicants of graduate school include: Statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and international documents, like student’s visa and international student services form. 

Graduate Degree Program Plan: There are two types of plans offered by the university for a Masters degree. The details are mentioned below: 

Plan I: Students working under Plan I in masters degree require 24 semester hours credit in coursework and 6 hours in thesis research.

Plan II: Students working under Plan II in masters degree require 30 semester hours credit in coursework and clear the comprehensive examination. A culminating or “capstone experience” can also be completed instead of clearing the comprehensive examination. For details on comprehensive examination, check the program page.

Each plan I and II, requires 18 semester hours in a major subject. The remaining coursework hours can be completed in either major or related fields. In most departments and some divisions of the university, candidates are required to complete their degree under Plan I.

Latin Legum Magister/ Master of Law (L.L.M.)

How to apply: Online applications can be made through LSAC. Applications can also be made by completing a paper application found at law.ua.edu/apply and mailing it at the Law of School Admissions Office. 

When to apply: International applicants should send/submit their completed applications by September 1 of the year prior to enrollment. 

Application fee: 54 USD

Academic requirements: The english language scores are a mandatory requirement , where english is not the language of instruction for the first degree of law. The minimum scores are mentioned below:

University of Alabama Transfer Student Admissions

International transfer students can apply to the university online. An application fee of 40 USD is waived. The application is continued with MyBama. This is followed by uploading documents, like PR and visa. The proof of English proficiency and official transcripts are to be submitted. 

Application status can be tracked through myBama ID which is provided to every applicant. Students must set up their IDs as soon as possible.

Applications are not considered complete till all the required materials have been received.

Graduate applicants can only apply to two programs at once. The second program will require a separate application package and application fee.

Ans. Our student-to-faculty ratio is 24:1. Some of your classes might have large lecture sections with smaller discussion or lab sections that provide more individualized attention.

Ans. There is a variety of automatic merit and competitive scholarships available for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Incoming freshmen should submit their scholarship application by January 15, transfer students by March 1, for the Fall enrollment.

Ques. When is the scholarship application due for Fall entering freshmen?

Ans. Admitted freshmen entering Fall must submit their online scholarship application by January 15.

Ques. Are SAT/ACT writing scores required for admission?

Ans. A writing score is not required but can be reviewed if a student does not meet regular admissions standards as set forth by the ACT/SAT and GPA requirements.
