Which medical college is better: UCMS or VMMC?
Here are a few parameters on which one can compare the two colleges-
- Academics- UCMS has a more rigorous testing schedule, which is why its academics is considered better. On the other hand, VMMC provides you with more freedom to study the topics of your choice. For example, if you wish to apply for USMLE, you will have ample time for standard books, and extracurriculars to boost your CV.
- Campus- The campus of UCMS is double in size. But VMMC has a safer campus where you can roam 24*7 without safety concerns. This is because of a good number of security guards dispatched throughout the college and hospital.
- Location- Unlike UCMS, VMMC is surrounded by multiple hangout places. You can visit Hauz Khas, South Ex, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Green Park, and Saket from VMMC. CP is just 30 minutes away, even by metro.
- Hostels- UCMS offers single seater hostel rooms for all, and the rooms are more spacious as well. At VMMC, you can customize your room according to your will. I don’t know about UCMS, but VMMC hostels have no curfew timings. NBH (New Boys’ Hostel) has good rooms, surrounded by greenery.
- Hospital- Safdarjung Hospital is better than GTB. It has the largest OPD in Asia, so you’ll have ample cases to learn. There’s a large number of PG seats at Safdarjung.
- Societies- VMMC has a dance society (Neocracy), a music society (Kehrawa), a fashion society, a sports society and a dramatic society (Kaivalya). I am not aware of the societies at UCMS.
Based on these parameters, I would recommend you join VMMC for your MBBS. But even UCMS is a good college.
Which is better for ug university college of medical sciences (ucms) or vmmc?
As a student of UCMS, I will try to enlighten you about my college.
- Location- It is true that UCMS is located in the periphery of Delhi, and its surrounding is not as developed as that of VMMC. Regardless, the location of UCMS offers most of the facilities required for a good college life. You can access Cinepolis, PVR and Big Cinemas from here, reach CP in 20-30 minutes by metro/private vehicle, and catch a metro from Jhilmil metro station to explore Delhi/NCR.
- Campus- UCMS has a beautiful campus, the best among Delhi medical colleges. It has a huge central field where you can play cricket, basketball, football, etc. Boys get single seater hostel rooms from the first year itself. The campus has two 24*7 canteens, a book shop from where you can access all your medical books, an ATM, and a post office.The hospital has undergone renovation, and looks new and well managed.
- Academics- UCMS offers excellent academics. The faculty is skilled and teaches with sincerity. The Histology Lab in the Anatomy department is really good.
- Extracurriculars- UCMS has a sports society, a western dance team, a theme choreography team, a dramatics team, a musical society, a literary society and a medical education unit. You can join any of these.
According to me, both UCMS and VMMS are good medical colleges. You can choose the latter if location is a concern to you, otherwise, UCMS is a good choice too.
Should I choose VMMC over MAMC and UCMS just because of its PG benefits?
There are other advantages of choosing VMMC over the other two colleges, besides its internal PG quota.
First of all, Safdarjung hospital gets really good funding. In the last six years, it has built two new buildings (one Emergency and one Superspeciality). VMMC offers a decent college environment, just like other colleges. The internal PG quota is definitely a big advantage. To get internal medicine at MAMC, you’ll need around AIR 350. On the other hand, at VMMC, you’ll get it with AIR 9000.
This advantage might be diluted as more colleges get added to IPU. Regardless, you’ll be offered a great hospital, and a good college. Between MAMC and UCMS, the former has a locational advantage.
So, here is why you should choose VMMC over MAMC and UCMS.
Do people in AIIMS-D, JIPMER, AFMC, MAMC, VMMC, LHMC, and UCMS become egoistic?
Medical students from all these colleges are quite decent. They are normal people studying at reputed institutions. I have good friends in MAMC and LHMC.
It is in fact society that puts an extra burden on these people. They are expected to be social all the time. But this expectation is very unrealistic.
It is not right to put labels on these individuals. Their busy schedule should not be confused with egoistic behavior.
How is the life of PG residents of DELHI university colleges namely MAMC, LHMC and UCMS?
The life of a PG resident of Delhi University colleges like MAMC, LHMC, and UCMS depends on the steam they belong to. For instance, LHMC OB-GYN and Paediatrics have the highest workload while the rest of the streams have relatively lesser workload.
Almost every stream has an equally high workload in MAMC be it Medicine, Surgery, Gyn, or Paediatrics. The heavy workload teaches the students to push their limits to achieve their goals. It trains them better and also imparts knowledge. Most MAMC graduates can handle any case confidently which even some consultants with an experience of more than 20 years find difficult to manage. UCMS on the other hand offers a moderate workload for all streams.
So, choosing MAMC will give you an all-rounded experience where you will gain maximum knowledge and experience. LHMC is a great choice if you are specifically interested in OB-GYN or Paediatrics only.
