JBIMS: 22 Answered Questions

How are IIM A students different from students of, say, SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS or JB?

Aditi BanerjeeLives in Bangalore

The peer pool of IIM Ahmedabad varies from that of other B-schools like SP Jain, FMS, and NMIMS because of the admission criteria and quality of intake. The majority of the IIM Ahmedabad batch comprises performing students with CAT percentile almost touching 100 percentile. and most of them got close to the 100 percentile in CAT and they get opportunities to study business studies in IIM A, B, and C. Very few students get into IIMs through the process of diversification only if they scored more than 80 percent grade in Xth, XII th and Graduate Examinations. The other B schools like SP Jain, FMS, NMIMS, or JB don’t have such strict criteria and the peer pool comprises students from diverse academic profiles rather than just top CAT rankers.

This is the major point of difference between the two kinds of B Schools. As a result of this, IIM Ahmedabad students are offered better placement opportunities at the global level than these average B-schools.

What CAT percentile do I require to get calls from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS and MDI Gurgaon?

Nikkil Visha
Anuraag DasStudied at MBA from NMIMS (2020)

For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are

  • ABC and FMS: Both institutes required nothing less than 99.5. Those who get admission at a lesser percentile, usually don’t belong to the GEM category. There are many who don’t even get a call with 99.3. So to stay on the safer side, go for nothing less than 99.5.
  • IIM Indore and Kozhikode: Both the institutes require percentiles around 97.5 for an interview call
  • SPJIMR: This Institute has unique selection criteria under which CAT is given less value and calls are issued on the basis of the candidate's profile. The CAT percentile required in this case is less than the normal if you have a good academic profile along with work experience,
  • MDI: This institute issues calls around the 96% mark.

It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.

Do students from IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI bunk classes like engineering students?

Pragya TripathiCSE IITK'15, IIMA Batch of 2015-17

At IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI, attendance is seen as a crucial aspect of the learning experience. Every effort must be made to be present in class and to participate actively in the discussions. In fact, class participation is considered to be such an important factor in determining grades that a significant portion of the total course weightage is allocated to it. This system is in place to encourage students to be engaged in the learning process and to ensure that they are taking full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them.

On the other hand, at IIT Kanpur, there is a more relaxed approach to attendance. While it is still advisable to attend classes and to be present for lectures, there is no strict requirement in place. This gives students more flexibility and allows them to choose when they want to attend classes based on their personal schedules or other commitments. It also means that engineering students are not penalized if they miss a class or two, as long as they are able to make up for it by participating in other ways, such as completing assignments or preparing for exams.

Overall, both B-schools and Engineering colleges have different approaches to attendance and class participation. While IIM Ahmedabad places a strong emphasis on being present in class and participating actively, IIT Kanpur takes a more relaxed approach. Ultimately, the choice between the two institutions will depend on the individual student's preferences and learning style.

How is MDI gurgaon's PGP-IM Programme?

Harshal SonawanwPGDMS, PGMFM in Master of Commerce & Bachelor of Commerce, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 1995)

MDI Gurgaon’s PGP-IM Program is one of the most coveted Management courses of the institute. It has several features that distinguish it from other regular PGP courses offered at top B Schools. My brother opted for this course out of many and he listed the following reasons that compelled him to go for the program

  • The PGP-IM students of MDI Gurgaon are offered an MBA degree from ESCP Europe and this is a major turning point in steering their career globally.
  • The admission criteria of the programs have witnessed slight changes with a work experience of 2 years being a compulsion. This is mainly because most European companies prefer prior work experience and hence it becomes easier to get jobs then.
  • The work experience requirement has made IM students of MDI Gurgaon in demand for Consulting jobs globally as well as locally.
  • The course is dynamic and requires you to go to respective ESCP campuses across London, Madrid, Paris, and Berlin for a 4-month term post which you do your internships, either in Europe or back in India.
  • Getting internships is not difficult at all and almost everyone gets an internship easily. 60% of students take internships in Europe, and 40% take them in India.
  • If you fail to get or yourself don’t take the PPO from your internship companies, you can sit for Final placements along with PGDM students without any bias.

It’s the above points that strongly assert the worth of the IM program at MDI Gurgaon. As it’s graduate you are not only an MDI alumnus but also an ESCP alumnus. You can use both brand names to your advantage. Choosing MDI is like investing for 2 years for a benefit of 30-35 years. So the brand name and alumni base definitely matter more than just a random IIM tag.

Why is JBIMS and not IIM A or XLRI, known as the “CEO Factory of India”?

Jayant ThakurMSc Finance, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (2019)

It can be affirmatively stated that JBIMS is considered one of the best business schools in India. The trio of IIM A/B/C holds a distinct brand value compared to other top colleges in the country and globally. The brand recognition and respect of the IIM institutes have increased due to its status as an "Institutes of National Importance" and the widespread accomplished alumni base both in and outside of India.

JBIMS boasts an impressive list of notable alumni, including Vinita Bali, the Managing Director of Britannia, Lalita D. Gupte, Chairperson of ICICI Venture Funds Management Company, and Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director & CEO of ICICI Bank, India, just to name a few. Moreover, the Managing Directors and CEOs of some of India's largest companies such as ICICI, HUL, Kotak Mahindra, and Piramal are alumni of JBIMS.

Do graduates from IIMs and JBIMS get the same salary in MBB?

Pratyasha
Hardik NagarCSE IITK'15, IIMA Batch of 2015-17

It is important to understand that MBB, a Management consulting firm operates on a level playing field when it comes to career development and opportunities. Regardless of one's background, the only determining factor for success at MBB is one's performance within the firm. The company values hard work, dedication, and results above all else, which is why your alma mater will not have any impact on your salary, career trajectory, or the type of work you are assigned.

This emphasis on the performance of graduates from IIMs and JBIMS over external factors is a unique aspect of MBB and demonstrates the company's commitment to providing equal opportunities for all its employees. The company recognizes and rewards those who have the skills, drive, and determination to excel in their roles, regardless of where they come from.

In conclusion, it is essential to understand that your alma mater, whether it is IIM or JBIMS, holds no weight in determining your salary in MBB. The focus is solely on individual performance, and the company is committed to providing equal opportunities for all its employees.

How is a MSc Finance from JBIMS?

Hardik VaghelaStudied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

While considering the worth of any program you should consider 3 factors namely curriculum, peer learning, and profiles offered. Let’s discuss M.Sc Finance from JBIMS on the basis of the following factors

  • Curriculum: The course structure is pretty good and the quality of knowledge one acquires is also decent. Experienced alumni are invited to hold sessions that explore corporate values. The teaching faculty is also learned and experienced.
  • Peer group: Only 30 seats are available for this course so only the best and the cream students are selected. This is also why the peer crowd is extremely talented and there is cut-throat competition. Good peer learning enriched the overall experience of the program.
  • Profiles: The placement opportunities are great at JBIMS and the alumni are always there to assist you. The profiles offered both in internships and placements are also decent. The students are encouraged to participate in competitions to upgrade their skills and gain exposure. Sharing the campus with MBA students adds up to the overall experience.

Is it okay to leave JBIMS for IIM Trichy as it has an IIM tag and the companies prefer IIMs more?

Bhaskar Das
Daksha GargM.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (Expected 2023)

There are nine reasons for choosing JB over Trichy. Firstly, JBIMS has a stronger alumni base, with many successful CEO's having graduated from the institute. Secondly, JB has a better reputation in the industry. Thirdly, JB ranks in the top 10 colleges, while Trichy is far behind. Fourthly, the average salary offered at JB (INR 27.63 LPA) is higher than that offered at Trichy (INR 17.01 LPA). Fifthly, JB offers better roles and opportunities. Sixthly, the location of JB (Mumbai) is a major advantage over Trichy. Seventhly, the IIM tag carries more weight when one graduates from BLACKI compared to a newer institute like Trichy. Eighthly, the return on investment for JBIMS is higher than that for Trichy. Finally, the cutoff for general category applicants at JBIMS is 99.93%tile+ in the CET, while the cutoff for Trichy is 93%tile+ in the CAT.

This demonstrates the higher level of competition at JB compared to Trichy.

Rajat TokasBusiness Analyst at Allicient Technologies Pvt Ltd (2020–present)

JBIMS, the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, holds the 7th ranking among B-Schools in India, after BLACKI (IIM). The reasons for its popularity are various and include:

  • Location: JBIMS is located in the heart of Mumbai, which is home to many financial company headquarters. The Western region of the country has become a B-school hub and besides JB, there are many top B-schools such as NMIMS, KJ Somaiya, and Symbiosis. Furthermore, Mumbai is the financial, commercial, and entertainment capital of India and JB's proximity to the commercial hub of India (Nariman Point) provides an added advantage.
  • Ranking: JBIMS has been ranked 10th by the IIRF 2023 in the Management Category. Additionally, the Institute has been ranked 10th among the Top Public MBA Institutions in India by Outlook 2022. JBIMS has also received the 10th rank among the top 10 Institutes of India for MBA by the Week in 2019.
  • Seats Allocation/Intake: JBIMS has an intake of only 120 students in a batch, whereas other B-schools admit nearly 400 students.
  • Fees: JBIMS offers its program at an approximate cost of 6 lakhs, while other B-schools offer programs costing nearly 15-16 lakhs.
  • Alumni Base: JBIMS has a strong alumni base and is known as the "Factory of CEOs." Notable alumni include Chanda Kochhar (MD & CEO of ICICI bank), Mani Ratnam (filmmaker), Vinita Bali (MD of Britannia), Uday Kotak (Chairman & MD Kotak Mahindra Bank), and Siddharth Roy Kapur (CEO of UTV Motion Pictures).
  • Placements: Due to its small size, JBIMS has a record of 100% placement every year and boasts an average salary of 18.76 lakhs per annum.
