For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are
It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.
Students at IIM-A are similar to those at SP Jain, NMIMS, FMS, and JBIMS. Aptitude and intelligence are roughly comparable. IIM-A students do not have to compete as hard for placements, so they are less concerned, whereas students from other colleges are constantly concerned about placements.
You'll notice that students from other colleges perform better in competitions than IIM-A because they are generally more hardworking during MBA because the struggle is greater for them. However, because of the brand name, IIM-A students receive far more exposure than students from any other college in India, which benefits students greatly in their personal development.
At IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI, attendance is seen as a crucial aspect of the learning experience. Every effort must be made to be present in class and to participate actively in the discussions. In fact, class participation is considered to be such an important factor in determining grades that a significant portion of the total course weightage is allocated to it. This system is in place to encourage students to be engaged in the learning process and to ensure that they are taking full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them.
On the other hand, at IIT Kanpur, there is a more relaxed approach to attendance. While it is still advisable to attend classes and to be present for lectures, there is no strict requirement in place. This gives students more flexibility and allows them to choose when they want to attend classes based on their personal schedules or other commitments. It also means that engineering students are not penalized if they miss a class or two, as long as they are able to make up for it by participating in other ways, such as completing assignments or preparing for exams.
Overall, both B-schools and Engineering colleges have different approaches to attendance and class participation. While IIM Ahmedabad places a strong emphasis on being present in class and participating actively, IIT Kanpur takes a more relaxed approach. Ultimately, the choice between the two institutions will depend on the individual student's preferences and learning style.
To secure admission to top MBA institutes in India, you should aim for CAT percentiles from 85 onwards. Here's the order of the institutes you should target in descending order - IIM K with 97+ percentile, MDI with 96+, IMT Ghaziabad with 90+, SPJain with 85+, and NITIE with as high as possible sectional-wise.
Even though SPJain is a premier institute, it gives a call from the 85 percentile onward, since they focus on overall values that an individual possesses and want students with more values in them. They have 2 group interviews, so they follow a rejection procedure.
NITIE has a sectional cutoff, so it's advisable to have as high as possible sectional-wise, as many people with an overall CAT percentile in the range of 97-98 were not selected in either of their 2 programs(PGDM and PGDIESM) in 2016.
IIM K also has a sectional cutoff of 90+, so it's important to score well in each section.
It's worth noting that these institutes do not have a sectional cutoff, but it's always advisable to have a 90+ sectional percentile to be on the safer side. Aim for high percentile and sectional scores to improve your chances of securing a seat in these prestigious institutes.
The SPJIMR PGDM Marketing program is similar to top B Schools like IIM ABC. The key highlights of the same program are listed below. Please note these are not generic and are specifically related to the Marketing program.
Curriculum: The curriculum is almost exactly what is taught at elite B Schools. The relevancy of the curriculum is maintained through unique programs like GFT wherein a 3-week immersion at some of the finest universities of the USA takes place. A very interesting program called ‘A day in the life of a Salesman’ is a much talked about program at SPJIMR. In this, you will get to shadow a salesman from a reputed FMCG company so that you understand the techniques of sales and distribution.
Pedagogy: The pedagogy adopted is usually a case-based approach. Mostly Harvard cases are used to strike discussions in the classrooms. Additionally, live projects are conducted by various visiting companies. Such initiatives help formulate an effective pedagogy.
Faculty: The faculty is a great combination of professors with theoretical knowledge and industry experts. All are highly competent in their respective fields.
Batch: The diversity of the batch can be looked up on the official website by checking the profiles of the Marketing batch specifically. Usually, the crowd is diverse and has an overall good profile.
Placements: The placement statistics can be checked on the official website. The figures are inflated but can be used for comparison purposes only. The table below includes the key highlights of SPJIMR placements 2023

SPJIMR Information Management PGDM program is suitable for those who want to shift from technical IT to management and business roles. This unique course is updated annually to keep up with the latest developments in the IT field and is on par with the best B-schools around the world.
The faculty at SPJIMR are highly dedicated and valued for their academic excellence and business backgrounds. In addition to classroom courses, IM students learn from industry visits, guest lectures from corporate gurus and CXOs, and live projects designed to facilitate the use of theory in practice.
At SPJIMR, peer learning is highly effective, and there is a collaborative culture in place. Students are selected based on merit, and the competition is stiff due to the high quality of peers. Most IM students come with expertise in various domains, and they work together as a team on activities such as the Cross Course Project, which is a platform to piece together all learnings from the IM coursework and consult on a real IT business challenge.
The placement opportunities available in the IM specialization are regarded as a valuable benefit, and SPJIMR attracts top-tier firms like Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, HCL, GE, Make My Trip, Capgemini, Cognizant Business Consulting, Deloitte, and many more. The roles open for the IM area include IT consulting, Business Development, Product Management, and General Management in IT companies and e-Commerce majors, and Corporate IT roles (CIO growth path) in IT user companies. The advantage of the IM specialization is that both you and the firms find yourselves in a win-win situation when it comes to mapping skills versus roles.
Let me make this clear, there is no fixed specialization that will help you make it into counseling.
For working professionals: Companies that visit the campus for placements usually prefer Finance and Operations background. People with a technological background opt for tech consulting while many go for Sales and Operations consulting as well. The companies are not interested in specialization, rather they look for how good your CV is. So, we can say a guy from a pure manufacturing background who is currently studying marketing can also make it into consulting.
For freshers: The best specialization to choose to make it into a big consulting firm for a fresher is Finance. The concepts included in the Finance specialization are more connected with consulting. So if your area of interest covers both, Finance and Consulting, then opt for Finance while the target for consulting. As far as Operations is concerned, it’s not easy to get admission. Even if you do the chances are lower unless you do internships and projects.
Lastly, remember there is no direct relation between the choice of specialization and placements. Even if you fail to get into your desired company, know that it is not the end. You can slowly achieve your goal provided you are certain of it and are working hard towards achieving it.
MBA admission in Indian B Schools is a fairly weird process in comparison to that of foreign B Schools. In India, the admission process requires a candidate to have some work experience and in certain B-schools, it even carries a certain weightage. But during Final Placements, this scenario changes entirely as the recruiters prefer freshers over experienced candidates. The major reasons for this contrast are:
Recruiters are looking for candidates with work experience of not more than 11-12 months. Honestly, this strategy is illogical as a person with more work experience is bound to excel much better than a fresher, and restricting him from getting a job just because they cannot be exploited to the fullest extent is a bit cruel.
The scenario is pretty much the opposite in foreign countries that prefer MBA candidates with work experience only. This is because in India MBA is considered a way to become more employable or earn a fatter cheque. Whereas in the West, it is a means to upgrade your career and take it to new heights. The entire concept of MBA is at fault in India thereby this illogical strategy.
In my opinion, MBA candidates should have a work experience of at least 1 year, only then they can harness the MBA program to the fullest and not approach it just as a source of placements.
Your skill set is the most important factor that determines your employability in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This skill set is something that you can develop over time with experience.
Keep in mind that there are very few opportunities for freshers from SPJIMR post an MBA, although IIM-K is a separate case. If you are a Keralite or a Malayali, the UAE may be another option to consider.
Recruiters in the GCC region will always prefer someone who knows Arabic, French, or other foreign languages. This is something that you can work on and improve over time.
After a few years of solid work experience, your chances of getting a job in the GCC region are higher. However, keep in mind that recruiters have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to hiring, especially for jobs that require cheap labor from Asian countries.
In the Middle East, your experience matters a lot, as well as your ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. You need to be able to adapt quickly and work efficiently to succeed.
It's important to note that Western nationalities also have an edge in the Gulf job market. If a company has the option to choose between a Marketing person with similar skill sets, an average-looking Indian guy, and a Western-style icon with a model-like personality, they will most likely choose the latter. This is because most jobs in the Gulf require excellent communication skills, a little bit of relevant experience, and a Driving License.
Yes, it is possible to change your MBA specialization at SPJIMR after the first year, but it is not a common occurrence. However, if you are looking to switch from Marketing to Finance, it is highly improbable but still possible to convince the management.
It's important to keep in mind that Finance is a specialization that requires a basic background in financial knowledge, which is not always the case for Marketing. This means that changing from Marketing to Finance may be harder for the management to accept than the other way around. It's also important to note that some students have been rejected when requesting to change their specialization.
If you have a financial background, it's possible that you initially tried to get into the finance specialization at SPJIMR but were accepted for your second preference of Marketing. If this is the case, it may be difficult to convince the management to switch your specialization in the second year. However, if you excel in finance subjects in the first year, it may be possible to convince them otherwise.
