National Institute of Design (NID) is a design school established in the year of 1961 in Ahmedabad, India. NID offers professional educational programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels with five faculty streams and 20 diverse design domains. To apply for admission, the candidate’s must visit the official website of the institute and fill in the online application form.
At undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Designing (B.Des) course is offered under eight different specializations from the NID Ahmedabad Campus. The institute also offers a Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD). The duration period of both the courses is four years. At postgraduate level, NID offers a Master of Designing (M.Des) program under 18 different specializations. The duration period of all the PG courses is two and a half years. At the doctoral level, the institute offers a Ph.D. programme in both full-time and part-time formats. The full-time Ph.D. programme is of three years’ duration and will include a stipend given to the candidate for three years.
Admission to all of the design courses is granted on the basis of Design Aptitude Tests which will be conducted in two stages: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims and Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains. Based on the Merit list of DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will have to appear for DAT Mains.

Admission will be granted on the basis of Design Research Test (DRT) which will be conducted at NID Ahmedabad Campus. Appearing for the DRT or being included in the shortlist does not guarantee admission into the programme.
Candidates shortlisted after the DRT will be invited to appear for an interview and make presentations to a committee at NID.
As part of the NID admission process, candidates need to first fill their application form. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for this design entrance exam are then eligible to appear for NID DAT Prelims. Aspirants who clear the first stage of NID admissions then need to appear for NID DAT Mains. Finally, candidates who clear this admission round as well are offered admission in the course/ college of their choice.
NID admissions 2022 is a two-tier process. Thus, for NID admissions candidates need to appear for NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains). The objective of conducting both these tests is to assess knowledge, skills as well as behavioural abilities of candidates.

Ques. What is the exam pattern of NID DAT?
Ans. NID Exam is held in two stages. The first stage is the preliminary exam. The exam will comprise of 2 papers. Paper 1 will comprise 70 marks questions of objective type and Paper 2 will comprise 30 marks questions of subjective type.
Stage 2 is the main examination that will be conducted for those students who clear the 1st stage. The stage 2 examination will be based on practical tests including sketching/ drawing, handicraft models, group discussions as well as presentations. The examination will carry 100 marks.
