NICMAR: 9 Answered Questions

Being a mechanical engineer, should I do an ACM from NICMAR, Delhi NCR?

Kanika SharmaStudied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune

My brother is a mechanical engineer who took the path you're planning to take. You can surely do ACM from NICMAR. Although, I will recommend that you do it from the Pune Campus.

It is better in terms of Placement opportunities available. It is more diverse and will help you in being exposed to varied perspectives.

A lot of opportunities await you as a Mechanical Engineer in the Middle East in HVAC and in the MEP Departments of Construction Companies.

After doing a PGP in ACM from NICMAR, which job will I be getting, and how will be life after that?

Anamika SinhaStudied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR)

After you pass out from NICMAR, that name has a lot of significance. The organization you join values it plainly, and they have strong standards (these standards were established by former students who are currently in key management positions).

NICMAR students mostly get placed in Planning/Contracts/Business development/ Tendering kind of profiles.

The early years would involve a lot of work and long hours. Once you adapt, learn, and establish yourself, you'll soon succeed in your roles and be able to compete in decision-making with top management.

This is a fundamental concept for whatever company you work for following NICMAR. Simply put, NICMAR is a way to add quality and relevance to your hard work so that you might succeed at a faster rate. It is not a shortcut to a better life or job.

Is getting in NICMAR for a PGP ACM a good option when I have no work experience?

Anamika SinhaStudied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR)

Even though you do not have prior work experience, doing PGP ACM from NICMAR will always help you and give you an edge in the field of Engineering.

I have friends who joined NICMAR Pune just after UG in Civil Engineering. Some joined ACM and some joined PM at Pune. They pursued their respective course and with exposure to different companies during their internships and industry-satisfying pedagogy they were able to bag placements in Larsen & Toubro.

Do not hesitate to join NICMAR Pune if you get an admission call from them. Just dive into the curriculum and everything is sorted.

Should I do an MBA or go for construction management from NICMAR?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

First comes the course, Advance Construction Management (ACM), and any other MBA courses.

The finest option for any civil engineer, in my opinion, is ACM.

NICMAR or any other college, second part. The primary three or four criteria for selecting one college over another are as follows:

  • Education
  • Placement
  • Fees
  • Other facilities like hostel, food, etc

You can judge NICMAR or any other college based on the aforementioned criteria. Here are some NICMAR facts that can aid you in choosing wisely:

  1. Education (faculty) standard - This differs from the past as many excellent professors have gone and launched their own certification programs.
  2. Placement: You shouldn't worry, as the average package always relies on the condition of the market. The campus is visited by both domestic and foreign (Middle Eastern) firms.
  3. Fees - Approximately (Rs 12.5 Lacs) higher than average.
  4. Other amenities are good—you might even say better.

Finally, let me mention that you should compare these points to any other colleges you are considering before making a decision.

Is doing ACM at the NICMAR with 100% loan worth it?

Devesh RathiStudied Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure Management,NICMAR (2018)

Regarding your question, the following will determine your ability to repay loans in the future.

  • The (in-hand amount) package is more crucial: It comes down to the job you end up with and how well you get paid because more and more people are choosing this degree in the constantly contracting industry. This will depend on a number of factors, including one's grades, prior experience, interview preparation, the market environment, governmental policies, and more.
  • Workplace: Since it has an impact on your ability to save money and repay loans, it cannot be ignored. Imagine you are transferred to a city in tier 2 or 3 where the cost of living is quite low (housing rent, transportation, food, and power, for example). You have a few opportunities for enjoyment as well. You are left with no choice but to save. In the scenario above, assuming you receive at least the average package provided, you can likely pay off your loan in 5-7 years.
  • Attitude: To get an edge over your fellow NICMARians and climb the corporate ladder, you must significantly outperform them as all students graduate with the same minimum credentials after two years (and this is a large number).

NICMAR will continually provide you with many opportunities. Just take a leap of faith in the system and in yourself.

What are the pros and cons of joining ACM in NICMAR?

Kanika SharmaStudied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune

NICMAR's experience makes it hard to balance pros and cons.

Pros:

  • NICMAR Pune students are wonderful. You'll see people from across the nation. Different cultures, languages, and traditions under one roof. Great exposure.
  • Alumni Power: Over 15,000 NICMAR alumni are engaged on social media. AGNI is the industry-changing Global Alumni Platform.
  • Well-Structured Syllabus: All courses have industry-leading syllabuses. Subjects span the construction industry. The syllabus contains a good combination of technical and management disciplines, but many subjects are lacking.
  • Placements: No other college in the nation can recruit over 100 construction companies for campus recruitment. A great strength.
  • Campus life: Countless ethnic festivals, thousands of events, frequent club meets, 4 main fests. Live the NICMAR Pune campus life.

Cons:

  • Intake: NICMAR's intake has been rising over 6–8 years. The tide appears unstoppable. 1300+ students have degraded the institution and hurt placements.
  • ROI: Average Packages are falling every year, hence ROI is gone. Two or three years ago, it wasn't. It was justifiable with 600 applicants and 10 Lakhs in fees. No more.
  • Faculty Quality: Some prominent faculty have joined RICS or other competing institutes. Students think most NICMAR instructors are below average.
  • Placements: Companies have various options due to the huge candidate pool. L&T receives about 400 applications. Thus, the company largely relies on Resume Shortlisting and just a few students get to sit for process.

Finally, is the course worth it?

Depending on the student and expectations, yes or no.

If you have an education loan and want to find a nice company with a good package, choose a good placement agency. They charge less and give you more.

If you're a student seeking personal and professional growth. Yes. The college won't help, but it's nice. Grow yourself. Teaching, research, and crowd support are below average.

What do we actually study in the CPM (Construction Planning &Management) Master's degree course of NICMAR?

sumit rawat
Sharthak Kulkarnistudied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research (2018)

In the ACM program offered by NICMAR, you will learn about, Construction Planning and Control, Procurement and Contract Management, and Digitization. CPM is a subject that is taught to Civil Engineering students during their Final year.

Construction planning and control is just an extension of CPM. You have studied about calculating the slack time in CPM but in CPC you use those concepts for scheduling the projects and keeping the projects on time (Like Operations management). It encompasses three Ms i.e., Manpower, Material, and Money.

You will learn about the cost associated with every activity that may be while using or storing as an inventory. It is an interesting subject to study and quite an applicable subject in an organizational setting
